Unit7

It’s raining!

Language goals In this unit students learn to talk about the weather and talk about what people are doing. New language What are you doing? I’m watching TV.

What’s he doing? He’s playing basketball.

What’s she doing?

She’s cooking.

What are they doing? They’re studying.

How’s the weather? It’s raining.

Period 1(From P31 to P32) New words: rain, windy, cloudy, sunny, snow, weather, cook, study, how’s=how is Structures: How’s the weather? It’s raining.

What are you doing? I’m watching TV.

How’s it going? Great!

Teaching steps: Step1: Revision T: Write the question: What are you doing? On the board. Read the question and ask the class to repeat it. Then you might pretend to to be reading a book, playing soccer, When the class asks, What are you doing? You answer, I’m reading a book, and so forth. Step2 Presentation This activity introduces the key vocabulary. Focus attention on the cities in the picture. Ask, what is the weather like here? Supply the word and ask the class to repeat it. Say a sentence or two about each kind of weather. E.g.: It’s raining. Is it raining here today? Then ask Ss to match each word with one of the cities in the picture. Step3 Listening 1b Play the recording the first time. Ss only listen. Point to each city in the picture as it comes up on the tape. Play the recording a second time. Ask Ss to write the name of the city in the picture of its weather. Step4 Pairwork This activity provides guided oral practice using the target language. Point out the example conversation. Ask two Ss to read the dialogue to the class. Ask several pairs to present their conversations to the class. Step5 Listening 2a Point to the four pictures. Ask Ss to tell what each person is doing in each picture. Supply vocabulary words as needed. 2b Point out the list of names and the list of activities. Play the recording and

have Ss fill in the rest of the answers. Step6 Pairwork Ask and answer questions. Talk about the people in activity 2a. Using What’s Uncle Joe doing? He’s playing basketball.

Step7 Grammar focus Review the grammar box. Ask Ss to say the questions and answers. Homework Recite and copy the new words. Copy the sentences in Grammar Focus.

Period2

New words: bad, terrible Structure: How’s it going? Great! How’s the weather there?

It’s snowing.

Step1. Revision 1. Dictate the words and sentences we learnt yesterday. Step2 Presentation Call attention to the faces. Help Ss to identify how each person is feeling. E.g. ask a student, Look at this face. Is it happy? Is it unhappy?

Then point to the four words. Say the words and ask Ss to repeat each one. After that, ask Ss to match each numbered phrase by writing the letter of each face in the blank in front of the correct phrase. Step 3 Pairwork

Point out the conversation in the large picture and ask two Ss to read it to the class. Ask Ss to explain what How’s it going? ( It is similar to How are you? Or How is everything?)

Ask the Ss to work in pairs to practice the conversation.

Then call attention to the example in the small speech bubbles. Have two Ss read it to the class. Then choose some of the words and make some conversations by themselves.

Ask pairs of Ss to make up their own conversations. Step4 Game

This game provides oral practice using the target language.

Now let’s

work in pairs. One student looks at the picture on page 85 and the other looks at the picture on page 87. Please don’t look at your

Partner’s picture.

Student A says, in my picture it is sunny. Student B says, In my picture it is raining.

Period3

Step1: Revision

Dictate the words and drills in the last period. Step2. Presentation

This activity introduces more key vocabulary.

Focus attention on the five picture. Ask Ss to tell what the weather is like in each place, if they can. Say a sentence or two about each kind of weather. It’s cold in this picture. Is it cold here today?

Point out the numbered list of words. Then ask Ss to match each word with one of the picture. Step3 Pairwork 1b:Call attention to the example in the speech bubbles. Read the conversation with a student. Ask Ss to work in pairs. Have Ss ask and answer questions about the weather in the pictures in activity 1a.Using the structure How’s

the weather in picture d? It’s cold.

Step4 Listening 2a: This activity provides listening and writing practice using the target language. Read the headings on the chart to the class. Point out the answer blanks. Play the tape the first time. Ss only listen. Play it again and have Ss write their answers. 2b: Point out and read the second two headings on the chart: What are you doing? How’s the weather? Ask the Ss to listen and fill in the blanks. Step5 Pairwork 2c:Point out the example in the speech bubbles. Ask Ss to read it to the class. Point out the three questions in 2a.How’s it going? What are you doing? How’s it going? Ask individual student to repeat their answers.

Homework Copy the words we learned in this class.

Step4 Step1 Revision Dictate the words we learned yesterday. Step2 Reading

First learn the new words of 3a, then ask a student to read the passage to the class. Ask and answer some questions according to the text. After the Ss understand the passage, let them read it after the tape . Make sure they can read it correctly and fluently. Explain some important points in the passage. 1. Step3 Writing 3b look at the pictures of France. Then fill in the blanks.
