Unit 8

I’d like some noodles. The Fourth Period (Section B 2a-2c)

Teaching aims and language points: 1. Review the words and expressions, and be able to say, read and write them: 

candle, blow out, make a wish, in one go, bring good luck to



The number of candles is the person’s age. 

The long noodles are a symbol of long life. 2.

Be able to get some reading skills. 

The reading skill of finding out the main idea of each paragraph by fast reading 

The reading skill of finding out the details by careful reading 3.

Be able to know there are different cultures in different countries.

Have the idea of showing thanks and love to their mothers on their birthday.

Teaching steps: 1. Warming-up.

(1)Daily reading before class. Read the conversation in section A to get Ss into the habit of reading loudly and getting ready for the class. (2)Enjoy a video about Mommy Pig’s Birthday. (3)Brainstorming: What do you do or eat on your birthday?

Get Ss talk about what they often do or eat on their birthday to have a brain-storming and review the new words and phrases.

(4)Culture corner: What do people eat on their birthdays in China and in other countries? Ss talked about that people often have noodles and eggs on their birthdays in China. The teacher introduce some different birthday food in different countries. In Korea, people often have a bowl of seaweed soup to show their thanks and love to their mothers. Lead Ss to have the idea of showing thanks and love to their mothers on their birthday.

Reading. (1) Pre-reading Look at the picture above the passage and answer:

What is the girl doing? How old is she? How many candles are there on the cake? The girl is maybe seven years old because there are seven candles on the cake. Maybe the number of candles is the person’s age. (2) While-reading. Task 1

(Fast reading) Match each paragraph with their main ideas. Task 2

(Careful reading) Read the article about food traditions and complete the chart. Task 3

(Careful reading) Read the article again and answer the questions.

(3) Post-reading. Task4 Redesign the chart and try to retell the passage.

Homework : Write a passage about your birthday. 1). What do you do or eat on your birthday? 2). Are there any special meanings? 3). What would you like to do or eat on this special day?
