Teaching Objectives 1.

Knowledge Objectives: By the end of the class, Ss will be able to master the new words such as “artist”, “describe”, and new expressions like “see things the same way”. 2.

Ability Objectives: Ss will be able to improve their reading ability including skimming, scanning, and summarizing. 3.

Strategy Objectives: Ss will be able to master the skill of finding what the pronouns refer to in a passage. 4.

Emotion and Value: Ss will get the idea that everyone plays a part in society, and everyone should do something for it. II.

Teaching Procedures Step 1: Lead-in (5 min) T show a game with screen mirroring, in which the expressions of appearance is used. Ss then play the game with the sentences like “Is the criminal…?” or “Does the criminal…”. (Aim: Ss can review the expressions and words of the previous periods. And their interest can also be aroused.) Step 2: Pre-reading (1 min) T: What if there are no pictures? What is police artist? Ss get the meaning of police artist with pictures. (Aim: The topic of the passage is presented.) Step 3: While-reading (24 min) Paragraph 1 (18 min) Activity 1: Skimming (5 min) Ss skim and complete the mind map with the information in Paragraph 1. (Aim: Ss can get the general idea of Paragraph 1, and know how a police artist works.) Activity 2: Retelling (8 min) Ss work in pairs and retell paragraph 1 with the pictures as hints. (Aim: Ss can try using the new words and expressions in the passage.)

T: Which part is the most difficult?

Ss: When the police artist draws the pictures. Activity 3: Gaming: Try being a police artist (5 min) Ss play the role of police artists, and T play the witness. They are going to draw one of their teachers with questions. T: What do you think of the job?

Ss: Difficult. (Aim: Ss can review the expressions of describing appearance, and they can also think in the

way of a police artist. And this activity shows the key word, difficult, of Paragraph 2 as well.) Paragraph 2 (6 min) Activity 4: Learning a case from the police (5 min) T: Why is the job difficult? Ss read Paragraph 2 and find the answer, then match the persons with the description in this paragraph. (Aim: Ss can get the general idea of Paragraph 2.) Activity 5: Summarizing (1 min) Ss find the topic sentence in each paragraph and summarize the main ideas of them. (Aim: Ss can improve their summarizing ability.)

Step 4: Post-reading (10 min) Activity 1: Further thinking: A review of the passage (2 min) Ss recall the content of the passage and think who plays a part in catching the criminal. 1.

The witnesses and other people: fighting crime with words 2.

The police: fighting crime with gun 3.

The police artist: fighting crime with pencil and paper T show some pictures with the sketch and the criminal, and ask Ss what they think of the job. (Aim: Ss think about the passage in a further way, and can sense the importance of each role.) Activity 2: Group work (8 min) Ss work in groups to give a presentation about the job, police artist. They are supposed to present in the following ways: A: How does a police artist work? B: Why is the job interesting? C: Why is it difficult? D: What do you think of the job? Interesting? Difficult? Or…? (Aim: Ss are able to review the passage and practice using the new words and expressions in it. Also, they can get an idea that everyone plays a part in our society and everyone can do something for it.)

Step 5: Homework Ss are expected to search for more information about the police artist to make their presentation more detailed, and then write it down.

(Aim: Ss can put the new knowledge into use. Meanwhile, they can check if there is anything they haven’t mastered.)
