The topic of unit 8 is about the birthday food around the world, which is related to students’ daily life. It’s much easier to arouse students’ interests of learning this passage and help them develop a positive and objective attitude towards different food cultures in different countries. So this lesson is quite important.

Students think about the question and most students said their birthdays and they often eat a birthday cake.

Students learn the new words and phrases.

Other students tell the steps before eating the cake, and the birthday person does the steps. Students guess 教学环节

Step1: Lead in

Show some pictures of Chinese special festivals and ask students what day is special for them.

T: What day is special for you?

Let students talk about the food they eat on their birthdays.

T: What do you usually eat on your birthday? 设计意图：Through this way, I can lead to the topic of this passage and arouse students’ interest of the birthday food. So I can open up the students’

mind to think about the birthday traditions on their birthdays in order to do next step.

Step2: Before reading

Show some pictures of the steps before eating a birthday food and and teach them some new words: cake, candle, and phrases: make a wish, blow out, cut up, get popular.

Ask them to guess whose birthday is today in the class and prepare a real birthday cake. After that, invite the birthday person come to the stage.

T: Can you guess whose birthday is today in our class? If you guess right, I’ll give you a real cake.

S: Today is XX’s birthday.

T: Now, let’s celebrate XX’s birthday together, but you should tell us the steps before eating the cake. You say, we do.

learning interests. Celebrate the birthday can help students review the new words and phrases in a different way. This can help students remember the new words and phrases and it’s much easier to arouse students’ learning interests.

Step3: While reading Fast reading

Let students read the passage and match the main idea of each paragraph.

Let students divide this passage, and ask them analyze the structure of this passage. 设计意图：know the structure of this passage can help students understand the passage.

Careful reading

Let students read body paragraph 2-3 again and find out the birthday food and the special meaning in many countries, in the UK and in China. And write down the answers.

Let students fill in the blanks by completing a mind map.

Let students read paragraph 4 and answer the question.

Let students retell the whole passage in groups and ask some students come to the stage to retell the passage. 设计意图：Through this way, students can quickly know different food cultures in these countries. After that, students can retell the passage by using the mind map.

After reading

Learn more about traditional birthday food in other countries.

Divide students into 6 groups, and ask them to make a poster about the birthday food in groups in 6 minutes and then do a report.

设计意图：Through the retelling steps, students have learned how to introduce the birthday food and the special meaning. So in this part, this activity can help students practicing oral English and remember what they learned today.
