Why do you like koalas?

Learn the useful words and expressions about animals’ characteristics and features.

Students can use useful expression and sentence structures to talk about their opinions about different animals. Teaching methods:

Divide the students into two groups. Let them have a competition. The winner can get a big present. Step 1 Lead in Greet students as usual. Step2 Present the new words T: There are a great number of animals on the earth and they come from different countries. Now look at the pictures on PPT.

(show some pictures to the students.) T: Look at the first picture. What are these? Yes. They’re koalas. They come from Australia. As we know, they like to eat leaves and sleep all day, so they are kind of lazy.

(explain the words “koala, Australia, kind of, lazy” to the students. Teach them how to read and use the new words.) T: Now let us look at the second picture. They are elephants. They are from Thailand. I think they’re lovely and smart. Because they can do many things for people. But many people kill them for ivory. So they re in great danger now. (explain the words “Thailand, lovely, smart, kill, in great danger”

to the students. Teach them how to read and use the new words.) T: Now listen and complete the chart in 2a. Step3 Practice Ask students to check the answers. After explaining some useful words and expressions, ask students to read after the tape. Step 4 Pair work Work in groups. Students can discuss with teammates and use the following sentence structures: A: I like/don’t like ... B: Why do/don’t you like them? A: Because they’re ....(cute, smart, beautiful, lazy, scary, friendly, interesting, dangerous, shy...) B: Where are they from? A: They’re from...(China, Australia, South Africa, Thailand...) Step5 Games----Who have quick eyes? Teachers show several pictures and ask students to answer the questions. Students who answer them quickly can get points. (to testify whether students understand the words and use adjective to describe the features of a certain animal.) Step6 Survey Each group will get a picture of different animals. Ask students to do some research and write down three aspects:

Why people like/don’t like them? (3)

What is the current situation of the animal? Step 7 Summary

Ask some students to summarize what we have learned in this class. Go over the key words, phrases and sentence structures with students. Step 8 Homework Write a composition about your favorite animal?
