2.
Discovering the rules for comparative and superlative degrees of adjectives and adverbs. A: The superlatives form is –est or most …. In general, we use –est for short with words and most …for longer words. (The rules are the same as those for the comparative. See the notebooks of lesson Two. And we normally use “the” before a superlative.
Regular change We use =est for short words (one syllable): Cheap---cheapest
fast—fastest
(adjectives ending in –e add –r, -st; adjectives with one
Large—largest
thin—thinnest
vowel followed by one consonant double the final consonant.) We also use –est for two-syllable words that end in-y(-iest) Lucky- luckiest
early—earliest Easy—easiest
pretty-prettiest We use most…for longer words(two syllables or most):
Most modern
most serious Most expensive
most comfortable We use most… for adverbs that end in –ly: Most slowly
most seriously Most quietly
most carefully Also most often
but: earliest (not”most early”)
You can use –est or most …with some two-syllable adjectives, especially Quiet
clever
narrow
shallow
simple After superlatives we use in with places (towns, building, etc.)
What is the longest river in China? We also use in for organizations and groups of people (a class/team/company/etc)
Who is the tallest in our class? Irregular change Little Less least Good/well Better best Bad/ill/badly Worse worst Far Farther Farthest Further
furthest Many/much More most Old Old oldest Elder eldest III. Answer the questions on Page 24(SB) IV. Finish Language Focus I, II. Look at Picture 1. How many means of transport are there in Picture 1? What are they? A bus runs faster than a bicycle, and a motorcycle runs faster than a bus, so the motorcycle runs the fastest of the three. Ask the students finish Language I, II in class. V. Homework: Review superlative degrees of adjectives and adverbs. Read and spell the words according to the phonetics. Preview the text.
