The linking skills of American spoken English

Wang Qianru Aims：Learn several linking skills of linking while enjoying the song. Teaching steps:

Step one.

Warm up

Listen to the song “that girl” and lead in: Have you heard the song before? Do you understand what he was singing if you don’t look at the lyric?.. well, when we listen to music or watch movies, we may find it difficult to understand what they were saying, even though there was no new words. why?...because there was much linking in it. Today we are going to learn some linking skill. Step two:

I. a. show the first two sentences

b. T: now please read the first two sentences, how do you read them? c. Listen, try to find out the difference.

d. Ask two Ss to talk about their findings. Then teach how to link. Let Ss read after the teacher.

e. find out the linking rules: now please look at the two sentences carefully and find out what sounds you have dropped? ss… Yes, we dropped “t, d, h”.

f. talk about why and when to do so. T: Do you know why? …

well, you can pronounce these sounds and you’ll know the reason...because they waste a lot of air in our lungs and we have to breathe in before finishing a sentence. People don’t like that.

g. Now look at this sentence, sometimes we drop t, sometimes not, why? We can drop t,d when the next syllable begins with a consonant. And we drop h when the syllable before it ends with a consonant. We do this because the golden rule one: every syllable begins with a consonant. II. a. show the next two sentences. Let students read them, and try to link.

b. Listen and find the difference.

c. Teach how to link. Students practice and present. Teacher correct the errors. e. look at the linking carefully and lead in the next linking skill-transformation

III. a. show another sentences of the lyric. Ask a student to read it and try to link them. b. listen to the song clip and link again.

c. teach how to link and the students practice them. Then presentation one by one. d. talk about another linking skill-insertion T: since we have omission, we also have insertion. Please read the phrases by yourselves… now listen. Are they the same? No why? Here add “w” before “it”

e. teach, practice and present. f. talk about the reasons and rules of insertion. T: when to add ”w” and ”j” .

Step three

Ending :

a. sing the song with the music.

b. give the micro phone to some students. Make their songs heard by the teachers.
