Activity :Pulling The Carrots

Teaching content: From PEP primary English Students’Book, Unit 4“At a Farm”of Grade 4 V olume 2

New words: tomatoes, potatoes, green beans, carrots.

Sentences structures:

What are these? They are...Do you like tomatoes/potatoes/green beans/carrots? Yes, I do.

No, I do not. I like tomatoes/potatoes/green beans/carrots.

Introduction: Supposing that teacher intends to help students to acquire and enjoy long-time effective learning, it is beneficial for students to create a situation at a farm to play game. Therefore, In this 15 minutes, first teacher tells the whole class that we are going to play a game whose name is pulling the carrots at a farm, then introduces the rule of the game makes a demo with some student . At the end, teacher assigns students the roles of the game and fixes up a place for a farm. In this activity, a big farm poster, some animals’ headdress, a video and some words and sentences’picture.

Step 1: Introduce the game

Telling the whole class that we are going to do some funny activity at a farm, and teacher makes students guess what will they do at the farm. After they guessing it out, teacher invites four students to decorate the classroom to be a farm, everyone of the four students taking one concern put the big farm poster simultaneously on the ground. Therefore, we are at a farm.

Step 2: Assigning the roles

Ask them what can we do at the farm, if they answered the right that is playing a game, the first person to answer the riddle correctly would select a role by herself or himself. There are a large number of headdress of tomatoes, potatoes, green beans, and carrots to be selected for all of students. Teacher should ensure whether everyone have chosen or not, if someone have not do it, teacher should struggle to urge her or his to take part in and select her or his favorite food headdress for the student. At that time, teacher announces that now everybody have yourselves role of the game, the role is what you select the headdress. For example, if you select the carrot’s headdress, you will play the carrot role of the game with wearing the carrot’s headdress.

Step 3: Beginning the game

First of all, asking the whole class that do you like carrot? There are some different voices of this answer, including Yes, I do and No, I do not. I like.... Teacher divides the whole class into two part which are consisted of like and dislike, and a big carrot/tomatoes/potatoes/green beans. Teacher tells them which vegetable you like and you can go to pull it, but you have to speak the whole sentence which I like it. Let me show you a example:

If I like carrot, I will run as quickly as possible to pull the carrot, then speak I like carrot and ask other students do you like carrot? If the student who plays the carrot stand up, you will pull the carrot successfully. Do you understand? OK! Let’s start our game.

In this process, once the student makes a mistake, the whole class or teacher should correct his or her mistake. For example, some student would forget the words

or say the wrong words, the whole class should correct it into right ones for the purpose to ensure the achievement of activity.

Step 4: Making a conclusion

The teacher makes a conclusion about the activity named“Pulling the carrots”, which includes what they have learned, such as the quick reaction to words.

In order to consolidate what they have learned, teacher can recompose the chant ‘I like carrot’ like writing into this: Do you like carrots? Yum, yum, yum, Yes, I like carrots. Nah, nah, nah. Do you like tomatoes? Yum, yum, yum! I do not like tomatoes Nah, nah, nah! Do you like potatoes? Yum yum, yum! I like potatoes. Nah, nah, nah! Let the activity end in merry chant.
