Grade: Sports for all seasons Teaching time: 40 minutes Grade 5 Overall Design and Guiding Principles This is a reading about sports and the seasons when people do the sports. After the class students are able to learn some more sports and comprehend the whole passage. Meanwhile students are able to master some reading skills and enjoy learning English and doing sports. In this lesson I mainly employed Task-based Teaching Method, PWP Reading Model as well as the Communicative Language Teaching Method.
This lesson mainly consists of pre-reading, while-reading and post reading parts. The pr-reading part is intended to arouse students vocabulary about sports and teach some new sports words. Then the second part aims at reading and comprehending the passage . Finally, the third part is a writing task targeting at improving students’ ability of language output, and thus realizing the goal of communicative teaching.
Teaching Context Analysis of teaching material: This is a reading lesson. The reading material Sports For All Seasons is from Unit 8, Kid’s Box 5. The passage focuses on talking about sports and the seasons when people do the sports.
The topic is closely related to students’
real life, and in accord with students cognitive level, thus can make students learn meaningfully.
This lesson consists of four paragraphs. The first paragraph talks about Athletics, the season people do it and the reason why people do it in that season. The second paragraph talks about Golf and the time people do it. The third paragraph talks about Skiing, Snowboarding and Sledging, the season people do them and the reason why people do them in that season. The last paragraph talks about Football and the time people do it. Each paragraph is independent and shows what, when and maybe why. Analysis of students:
The objects of this lesson are students in Grade 5. Students in this phase have learned English for five years. So they have the ability of listening, speaking, reading and writing in English. They like games and are interested in learning English. They are brave to show their ideas in the class. They tend to focus on image thinking like pictures, videos and sounds, thus teachers should design various interesting, fun and relaxing activities to sustain students’ interests and attention. However, students in Grade 5 don’t have so much experience in reading. To read the passage quietly and do the tasks efficiently is a challenge for them.
Teaching Aims Aims of knowledge: (1) master some important words, such as: golf, athletics, snowboarding, sledging, adult and so on. (2) be able to talk about the topic about sports and the seasons. (3) be able to ask and answer what, when and why questions to comprehend the passage.
Aims of ability: (1) be able to get correct information from reading material. (2) master some relevant reading skills including skimming, scanning and guessing words . (3) be capable of talking about sports they know. (4) be able to write sports they like and the seasons they do them.
Aims of emotion: (1)
enjoy the class and learning English. (2)
build confidence towards reading the passage. (3)
desire to do more sports to make their bodies stronger and happier.
Key Points and Difficult Points Key points: 1. mastering of the key words. 2. comprehending the reading material. 3. relevant reading skills.
Difficult points: 1.getting the correct information from the reading material. 2. reading and answering the questions in one sentence.
3.can think, write and read their writings.

Teaching Procedure Step 1:Lead-in:
Play the game “hang-man” to lead in the topic word sports.
Step 2: Pre-reading:
Brainstorm the sports words they have known, then introduce other four sports which will be talked in the passage. Play the game quick eyes to consolidate the sports words they learned just now. After that, ask when do we play snowboarding, get the answer in winter. Show the title of the passage naturally.
Step 3:While-reading: Fast -reading Listen to the passage twice and answer two questions. 1.
How many sports are there? 2.
What are they?
The purpose of my design:
(1)
To draw the students attention by listening, which will help students have a brief understanding of the passage. (2)The questions are easy to answer, which help them to build confidence in going on learning.
(3)To prepare for the next stage.
Step 4:While-reading: Intensive reading Read the first paragraph and answer three questions: 1.
What sport does it talk about? 2.
When do we do the sport? 3.
Why do we do it in that season?
Then say the answers in one sentence:
We usually do athletics in summer, because it’s difficult to do in the cold and rain.
The purpose of my design: To read the 1st paragraph helps students get the key information about paragraph one, which will help them to read and get key information of the next three paragraphs.
Read the next three paragraphs and fill the blanks.
1. Paragraph 2. We usually ________________ in ______________. 2. Paragraph 3. We usually __________in _____________, because ________________. 3. Paragraph 4. We usually ________________ in ______________.
The purpose of my design: By filling the blanks, students can practice their reading skill of getting the key information. Meanwhile, students can comprehend the passage thoroughly.
Step 5: While-reading: Reading the passage aloud
Let each group read one paragraph to have a PK.
The purpose of my design: By reading aloud, students can comprehend the passage again. Meanwhile, students can be very active to have a PK.
Step 6: Post-reading: Writing
Show students some more sports and ask them to choose one to write about it. They should write what they like, when do they do it and why do they do it in that season. Then ask some students to share their writings.
The purpose of my design: Writing something about their favorite sport is a good way to use what they have learned today. They can follow the structures , the ideas and the vocabulary. And it’s also a way to give students a stage to show their thoughts and English abilities.
Step 7:Post-reading: Emotional education
Show students a video about healthy and strong players, then free talk with students about why we do sports? The purpose of my design: To let students say more and at the same time, let students know we can get a lot from playing sports, so encourage them to do more sports, and to enjoy sports.

Teaching Reflection
1.
The preparation is good, including the teaching plan, ppt, paperboard, the teaching material and the students, so the teaching process is smooth and enjoyable.
2.
I tried to be passionate in the class, which makes the class active and interesting.
3.
I paid a lot of attention to the connections with each parts, which make the class full as a whole.
4.
The students were a little nervous, but they acted very well after the short beginning period, which can be proud of.
5.
In the post-reading, I only asked four students to read their writings, which is not enough.
6.
Some of my personal pet phrases should be avoid and the organization of my language should be more simple.
