Lesson 4 First Impressions Period 1 Teaching objectives: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. To grasp the development and the main idea of the text. To develop the skills of fast reading and careful reading. Teaching methods: Students-centered and task-based Teaching aids: Multimedia and blackboard Teaching procedures: Step1 Daily presentation Step 2 Lead-in (pair work) Ss watch a vedio and express their first impression on the old man. Ss can use some adjective learned before to describe the old man. 课堂预热，导入话题。

Step3 listen and get the main idea of the text(individual work and class work) Ss listen to the text and fill in the blanks with the words to complete the generalintroduction of the story.---Task 1 让学生快速获取课文主体信息.

Step4 Fast reading (individual work and class work) Ss read the text and answer the questions----Task 2 让学生获取细节信息。

Step5 Careful reading Ss read the text carefully and do some exercises a. Do the matchings---Task 3 （individual work and class work）

Ss match the paragraphs with the development of the story. 让学生掌握文章故事的发展顺序，整体把握文章。

b. True or false（making inferences）---Task 4 (individual work and group work) Ss use the reading strategies to decide if the sentences are true or false. Teacher first shows Ss how to use the strategies with an example, and then Ss do the rest individually. Third, Ss check their answers in groups and then check with whole class. 让学生了解学习策略，通过上下文已知信息做出推断，实践阅读策略。

Step 6 Third reading Guessing the new words (Find the words from the text to replace the expressions in italics)----Task 5 (individual work and class work) Ss read the text and use the context to guess the new words. 让学生通过阅读感受新词汇并准确理解词义，训练猜词能力。
