THE BAND THAT WASN’T Teaching Design I Teaching Background Analysis 1 Analysis of the teaching material THE BAND THAT WASN’T is the first reading passage of Unit 5, Book II. It focuses on the topic of “Music” and explores the famous band --- the Monkees. This is the leading passage of this unit and it prepares for the grammar --- the Attributive Clause ---in this unit.

In this reading passage, it introduces the development of the famous band --- the Monkees. It firstly describes the stereotype of music band development. Many musicians meet and form a band because they like to write and play their own music. They play at different places to make money and feed themselves. Of course they hope to make records in a studio and sell millions of copies to become millionaires. Then the passage turns to the Monkees, a famous band which has an unusual experience in its development. Though the Monkees is not well-known to most people in China, its unique style and their way to fame single themselves out on the music arena. Most importantly, their way shooting to fame from ordinaries has struck a responsive chord in the heart of the students and brings about reflections upon the “star dreams”. 2 Analysis of the students Music as a popular topic is always the favorite among the students. Many students love to listen to English songs and some even sing quite well. They are crazy about their favorite band and know more about the band. Whatever the music is, students are eager to listen to. Since they all have learnt the new words and enjoyed the English Talent Show in the gym, many are ready to explore “Music” in this unit. II General Idea of design for this lesson

This is the second period of this unit. As the topic is “Music” in this unit, so the first step is to enjoy a song from the Monkees, about which the students are going to read. Throughout the class, different reading skills are practiced, from skimming, careful reading to post reading. And various exercises are designed to check their reading outcome. Besides, students will read on their own and work in groups as well. Instructions to different tasks will be given in English and input language will be used as much as possible. 1 Get to know the main idea of this passage and understand what each paragraph talks about.

2 Get to know how most bands come into being and the special way the Monkees developed.

3 Retell the whole passage with some key words and expressions. [Emotional aims]
