Teaching Plan for Module11 Unit3 Using Language Coping with Disaster Jiashan Senior High School

Sun Xiarong Learning aims: By skimming and scanning, students can understand the general idea of the whole passage and can clarify the structure of the whole passage as well. By reading the passage carefully, students can get some detailed information from the passage and have a better understanding of the passage.

By thinking the question what we can learn from Zhang Guoqing and by introducing the stories of Yu Minhong, Ma Yun and Nick, students can explore the true intention of seeking for knowledge and realize what to do when facing difficulties.

By counting the blessings, students can realize that there are many wonderful things to cherish in life and these are the source of courage for them to overcome the temporary difficulties. By discussing, students can not only summarize some specific ways to cope with difficulties in life but also improve their communication skills.

Learning important and difficult points: Explore the true intention of seeking for knowledge and realize what to do when facing difficulties.

Learning method: Task-based learning

Learning procedures: Step1. Warming up Show a picture of a student who is upset because of a failure in the examination. Ask students: What happened to the students in the picture? What do you want to say to him? Purpose: to create active classroom atmosphere and to lead in today’s topic.

Step2. Pre-reading

Look at the picture on the screen and guess the meaning of “disaster” in the title. Purpose: to have a correct understanding of the meaning of the title and today’s topic.

Step3. Reading

Task 1: Skim the passage and find out the main idea of the passage. Liu Xiaoming ________ the college entrance examinations and felt ________________________ but __________ with the help of two articles in magazines and newspapers given by his parents. Task 2: Read the passage quickly and match the main idea of each part.

Task 9:

What are the good things in Liu Xiaoming’s life? And what are the good things in your life? Purpose(task9): by asking the students to count their blessings, enable the students to realize that there are many wonderful things to cherish in life and these are the source of courage for them to overcome the temporary difficulties.

Step4. Post-reading Discuss in groups of four:

It is common for us to face difficulties (or we call them “disasters”) and feel upset now and then, but we know we can’t give up. Instead, we should face the challenges bravely and stick to our dreams.

Then can you think of some specific ways to cope with the “disasters”.

Purpose: through discussion, enable the students to come up with some specific and practical ways to cope with difficulties.

And in the process, students also learn to respect other’s opinion and practice their ability of expression as well.

Step5. Conclusion

We come into the world crying, but we should live the life with a smile. Give life a strong, brave and confident smile to create a unique and wonderful life.
