Aims
1) to let the students master some important words in this unit 2) to let the students know more about American and English literature Teaching Procedure:
Step I Warming up Let the students look at the picture on the right of P11, ask them what they see on it, what is written on it .(possible answers: a sign which reads “Park smarter, Don’t risk it, take your valuables.” ), then let them discuss the following questions 1) do you think crime in your community has increased in the past 10 years, decreased or stayed about the same? 2) Which of the following measures would be most likely to decrease crime? More education about responsible citizenship Education about how to keep yourself and your property safe More severe punishments for people who commit crime More police More encouragement for citizens to report criminals Step 2 Pre-reading Before the reading part, ask the students the following questions concerning reading on P11, ask them to look at the 2 pictures at thebottom of P11,what do they think has happened to the people in the pictures?
Period
2 Teaching aims: 1)
to improve the students’ reading ability 2)
2) to let the students know moreabout protecting themselves Teaching
procedure:
Step 1. ask the students to read the text quickly, complete it using the sentences and clauses below, which are the conclusions drawn by the police, then check it by reading the entire text to yourself. this means that the attacker had not been in trouble with the police they realized that the fingerprint belonged to one of the attackers
the police now realize that Leonard and his girlfriend could have been the ones who have attacked the taxi driver so they do not think the motive foe the killing had been theft, as Mr Bahmad had been stabbed so savagely, they thought the killer might be a person with a severe mental illness they now knew that he had been killed with a bow and arrow * this evidence told them that there had been at least 2 passengers in the taxi been injured during the attack on him and so they knew who the dead man was Step 2 after reading, ask them to complete the police notes on P13 from the reading passage Step 3. arrange the following events in the order that they happened, not in the order the police found out about them on P14. Step 4. Group discussion Read the information below and thin in your group discuss the questions The murders described in the reading passage took place in a country that does not put people to death as a punishment. For very savage murders, a criminal is sentences to prison for the rest of his life. If a murder is not as savage and it can be proved that the murderer is not likely to kill again and is sorry for what he ahs done, the punishment may be only 20 years or less in prison. For less serious crimes, criminals can be given a minimum and maximum sentence, for example , Leonard’s girlfriend was given a prison sentence of 3-7 years. How long she stays in prison will depend on how well she behaves in prison and whether sheshows shehas reformed and will bea good citizen in the future. list reasons why criminals should not be put to death for very serious crimes and reasons why they should What do you think is the best way of punishing people like Richard? How do you think the family of a murder victim would feel if the murderer was allowed out of prison after only 15 years? How do you think the family of the murderer would feel? Period 3 1) to let the students improve their speaking and reading abilities 2) to train the students to sum up the topic of a passage and retell the passage in their own words Teaching
procedure: Step 1 leading in : ask them to list at least 5 famouswriters that they already know whether at home read the series “Sherlock Holmes” by Arther Conan Doyle, ask one of them to
narrate one of them, maybe in Chinese. Step 2. Background information: Introducetheauthor to thestudents, as has been listed in period 1. Step 3. Reading “THE MYSTERY OF THE RED—HEADED CLUB”
after introducing the author, ask them to the passage quickly on p18 then answer the following questions, what kind of shop did Mr Wilson have and where was it? Why was Wilson so pleased to have Vincent as his assistant even though he spent a lot of time taking photos? What do you think it was about the ad that astonished Dr Watson? Why was it that Mr Wilson was at the front of the crowd when Mr Speares cameout of his office? What were the two rules Mr Wilson had to obey while working for the red—headed club? What do you think the red—headed club did and why do you think it was dissolved? Step 4. Summary ask the students to write down the characters in the story and draw a relationship diagram between them.
