Show the students a picture of my son and share a story with them.

One day, I stood my son in the corner for 15 minutes as a punishment. Because he bit a kid when playing outside. He argued, “If I hadn’t bitten him, he would have taken my toy away.” Unwilling to receive the punishment, he cried:”

I love you so much, but you don’t love me any longer. I wish you were not my mum! If you were not my mum, I wouldn’t be punished.” What he said really made my heartbroken. In order to make him take the matter seriously, I suggested he should be alone and calm himself down. 15 minutes later, he realized he had done something wrong and said,”I shouldn’t have bitten my friend. but what could I do?” I wanted to reason him into sensible action, can you give him some suggestions?

Step 2 Discovery 1. Compare the two sentences and find the difference between a fact and a wish.

1). If I am tired, I will take some rest. (a fact) 2). If I were you, I would share my toy with my friend. (a wish) 2. Translate the sentences and discover the basic rule of if-clause.

1) 如果不是受伤太严重的话，李娜是不会退役的。

（injure,retire）

If she hadn’t got injured so badly, Li Na wouldn’t have retired.

2). 如果我是贾玲，我会保持身材当“女神”而不是“女汉子”。(figure,goddess)

If I were Jia Ling, I would keep my figure to be a goddess, rather than a cow girl. 3). 如果明天是世界末日，我会做所有我想做的事情。

If tomorrow should be the last day of the world, I would do whatever I want.

1. Adverbial clause with mixed condition. 错综复杂句

Ask students to translate the two sentences and focus on the difference between them.

1) If you had followed my advice, you would have succeeded.

2) If you had followed my advice, you would be better now.

2. Elliptical sentences& inverted sentences. 省略和倒装

Invite students to change these sentences into inverted sentences.

1）If I were at school again, I would study harder. Were I at school again, I would study harder. 2）If you had come earlier, you would have met him. 3

Had you come earlier, you would have met him. 3）If it should rain tomorrow, we would not go climbing. Should it rain tomorrow, we would not go climbing.

3. Adverbial clause of implied condition. 含蓄条件句

Help students identify subjunctive mood in these sentences and be able to change them into if-clause.

1) Without the haze, our children _______________. (enjoy) 没有雾霾，我们的孩子现在就会享受蓝天。

2）But for the Chinese medical team, many people _____________________ Ebola. (die)要不是有中国医疗队，

很多人会死于埃博拉病毒。

3）He is capricious(任性的),otherwise/or he ______________ all his money. (run)他很任性，否则的话他就不会花光他所有的钱了。

4) You could have helped me out of trouble, but you ____________. 你本可以帮助我摆脱困境，但是你没有。
