Book 11 Unit 1 New Zealand (Reading) Teaching Design Teaching goals (1)Students understand words, phrases and sentence patterns in the passage and finally thoroughly understand the whole passage;(eg. Tectonic plates, hitting into each other, geological activity, backbone, a range of, running through, slope, carve out of, wipe out, take over.

)

(2)Students pay attention to and perceive the use of article in the passage, especially the ones used before place names.(eg. Lying in the South-west Pacific, New Zealand consists of two main islands-the North Island and the South Island-and many smaller islands, of which Steward island in the far south is the largest.) (3)Students will be able to make use of the words, phrase and sentence patterns to make a summary of either the geology or history of New Zealand.

(4)Students predict what the text may cover through the title and two sub-titles.(NEW ZEALAND: LAND OF THE WHITE CLOUD; Geography; History); (5)Students get to find the main idea of each paragraph in a short period of time by using fast reading technique: skimming; (6)Students go deep into the two sections of the text thinking and probing into some in-depth questions, and the find the answers. (7)Students get to know the history of New Zealand, finally being able to analyze and understand the relationship between Maoris and Western settlers.

Teaching key points & important points 1.

Students read the long text which includes rich new words and phrases and thoroughly understand the contents of it in class time. 2.

Students utilize mind-map in careful reading part, mapping the structure of the text and having a clear picture of the relationship between events in the text. 3. Students get to work with their classmates through brainstorm and discussion in order to find the answers to in-depth questions 4. Students have a good grasp of the text and language points in it, thus being able to make a summary of either the geology or the history of New Zealand.

Teaching methods Task-based approach to reading, communicative and cooperative methods,

Teaching aids A multiple-media computer. Teaching procedures:

Step One: Pre-reading 1.

Greeting.

Say hello to students and tell students that we are going to know a very beautiful country in the South hemisphere. Encourage student to guess what that country is. 

Design purpose To intrigue students’ interest in the topic of this lesson.

Give students the following descriptions: It is a country consisting two islands. It is a country famous for is heaven like scenery, where many films are shot, like The Lord of The Rings. By asking the questions above, students will be lead to the

topic of this lesson: New Zealand.

Design purpose To get students familiarized with the reading topic.

3.

Warming-up After introducing the students to the topic, the teacher will ask students to do a True or False test

to show how much they know about New Zealand. Statement One:

New Zealand is in the Pacific Ocean to the west of Australia.

Statement Two:

The capital of New Zealand is

Auckland.

Statement Three:

New Zealand is approximately the same size as the UK.

Statement Four: There are nearly 40 million sheep in New Zealand. Statement Five:

There are more people living in New Zealand than in the UK.

Statement Six:

About 10% of New Zealanders are Maori.

Statement Seven:

New Zealanders are often called “Kiwis” after the kiwi bird that lives only in New Zealand.

Statement Eight:

Kiwi birds are strong flyers.

Statement Nine:

New Zealand has many high mountains. 

Design purpose This true or false activity has two purposes: to establish what students already know about New Zealand; and to introduce some of the topics which will be featured in this unit, thus enhancing students’

understanding of New Zealand and trigger students’

desire to know more about this country.

Step Two: Reading Then the teacher will ask: “From the above true or false statements, I can see you know a lot about New Zealand and you show enormous interest in this country. That’s great! Today, we are going to read a passage about New Zealand, from which I am sure you get more valuable information and your understanding of this country will be enhanced. Now, please turn to page 2. 1.

Predicting and scanning:

Ask student students to turn to page2 and scan the title and two

subtitles of the passage with one question in mind “What aspects of New Zealand will be covered in the passage?” After reading the title the students will know there are two main sections in the text, separately introducing the geography and history of the country.

Design purpose By scanning and predicting, students will have a clearer idea about what the text will talk

About, the basic structure of the passage and the key information in each section. 2.

Careful reading:

1)

Skimming: Students will be given 2 minutes to skim the geography section of the text in order to get the

main idea of each paragraph in section one. Remind students to pay close attention the first and last sentences in each paragraph, which usually reveal the topic of the paragraph.

Design purpose By shimming the first part, student will get the hang of section one by knowing the basic structure of section one. 2)

Further questions Q1.Which New Zealand island has the most mountains? Q2.

In which island is there more geological activity? Q3.On which part of the South Island are you most likely to find sheep farms? Give reasons. Q4.What part

Design purpose By careful reading, students are expected to fully understand the passage, which means no

details should be neglected. This will prepare students better for the possible detailed questions in their exams.

3)

A mini word bank The text is densely packed with details and there are a number of words students may not

encounter before. The teacher selects some sentences which contain words, phrases or sentence patterns posing challenges to students and encourages students to ponder on them then explaining them in detail. 1.

New Zealand sits on two tectonic plates which are constantly moving and hitting into each other, causing a lot of geological activity, including earthquakes and volcanoes. These make up the outer layer of the earth’s surface. They float upon the molten rock below. There are many plates that are moving around the earth and causing continents to move towards or away from each other. When two plates meet there is often volcanic activity or earthquake. New Zealand is sited at just such a spot where two plates are rubbing against each other.

2. In the center of the island is an area called the Central Plateau, where most of New Zealand’s volcanic activity occurs. This is a flat area (either large or small) which can be found at the top of a mountain. It is a technical geographical term. 3.

A number of spectacular glaciers have formed in the Southern Alps, carved out of the mountains by moving ice over thousands of years. This is a moving river of ice. The water is frozen but continues but continues to move very slowly picking up rocks and scooping out the bottom of the river bed as it goes.

4.

A huge range of mountains, called the Southern Alps, form the backbone of the South Island. It is used to describe a long series of mountains that stretch from one end of a country or island to the other. It seems like the backbone of a person and the metaphor is used to describe the landscape.

Part Two 1)

Skimming and matching: Students will be given 2 minutes to skim the history section of the text in order to match the

main idea with the corresponding paragraph. Remind students to pay close attention the first and last sentences in each paragraph, which usually reveal the topic of the paragraph.

Design purpose By skimming the history part, student will comprehend what important stages the country has

experienced from about 1000 AD to the present time. 2)

Careful reading: Mind mapping The history section is long and filled with numerous details, thus mind mapping is a perfect

way to help students organize the information they get from the text and present them in a logic way. Mind map for para.4

Mind map for para.8

Design purpose By doing the mind mapping exercise, students will have two goals to attain: 1. Understand the text thoroughly and grasp all key information;2.Apply the information logically in the mind map to form the internal structure for each paragraph. Therefore, input and output are both practiced in this part. It shows not only their full understanding of the passage but also their ability to organize various information together. 3)

Discussion: Students will be asked to discuss 2 questions concerning the understanding of the history 西安铁一中

section in groups of 4 students.

1.The effect of the two sets of settlers on the land

*Who caused the most damage to the plants and animals of New Zealand- the Maori settlers or the European settlers? *How do you know? 2.The relationship between the Maori and the white settlers *Why did they quarrel? *Who do you think was in the right? Give reasons. 

Design purpose By doing the discussion task, students will have to make full use of the information they get and cooperate to make an in-depth analysis of hidden information in the text, thus enhancing students’

ability of synthesizing information, finding the logical of different details and sharing understanding with other students. Step Five: Homework Write to introduce the geography or the history of New Zealand. 

Design purpose Writing an introduction of the geography or history of New Zealand is a good way to review and

consolidate students’ comprehension of the text
