TED Speech Teaching Plan ——What should adults learn from kids? (合肥七中

陈雨婷)

Teaching objectives 

To lead students to conclude how to develop own speech with evidences; 

To activate students to what should adults should learn from kids; 

To lead students to think critically when faced with authority and adults; 

To provide students with ability to feel English fluency and practice speaking.

Teaching difficulties

The TED speech speed is a little fast, students may have difficulty in figuring out the details; 

The TED speech TOPIC is a little far, students may have difficulty understating some examples.

Key teaching points 

To lead students to discover how to organize ideas to persuade others; 

To arouse students’ awareness that learning between adults and students should be reciprocal.

Teaching process Lead-in

1.

Ask question: Have you ever been called childish? Lead students to share their experience. 2.

Show picture: some pictures about the childish things students might have done.

Pre-listening 1.

Introduce background information of the speaker 2.

Lead students to predict “what may be talked in the speech?” as well as introducing some new words to prepare for the listening. a. It is kids rather than adults that are to blame for many irrational, irresponsible behaviors.

b. The word “childish” shouldn’t be used to criticize irrational thinking because it is age-discriminatory. c. Learning between grown-ups and kids should be reciprocal. d. Adults place too many restrictions on kids and often underestimate their abilities.

While-listening 1.

Watch the video to get the main idea and decide the points Adora makes.

2.

Watch some clips and discover “how did Adora make her points clear?”

3.

Watch the clips again and lead students to work in pairs to match the examples with the related points.

4.

Watch the clips one by one and explain related culture knowledge. 5.

Lead students to answer the questions(if necessary, watch related clips) 

What did Adora doubt about her sister?

How did Adora’s parents show their expectations for her and her sister? 

What did Adora’s mother do to help her writing when she was six?

After-listening 1.

Conclusion: the speaker expresses her opinion that adults should learn from kids from three aspects:

Childish is age-discriminatory;

Adults place restrictions on kids for the lack of trust;

Adults often underestimate kids’

abilities.

2.

Discussion:

Present two posts about watcher’s opinions about the speech and discuss how the writer support the opinion. 

Invite students to discuss: Do you agree with Adora that adults should learn from kids? Why or why not?

Blackboard design

Teaching reflections: TED as an excellent international platform for exchanging various ideas is important and necessary to introduce to Senior high school classes. It will plays a greatly significant role in widen students horizons and think critically. But it calls for

more qualified teacher who not only has high language proficiency, but also good at choosing materials that is proper for students’ level.
