Analysis of teaching material：

This course comes from New Senior English for China Student’s Book 11, Unit 2 Detective stories, Learning about Language, the second part Grammar. For grade three high school students, this is a review course of Adverbial Clauses. By studying this part,we’ll enable students to master the definition, usage and some important sentence patterns of Adverbial Clauses.

Teaching aims：

1. To enable the students to have a better understanding of the definition of Adverbial Clauses.

2. To get the students to master the usage of different types of Adverbial Clauses.

3. To improve students’translation competence of some important sentence patterns of Adverbial Clauses.

Important point：

To get the students to master some important conjunctions of Adverbial Clauses of Time.

Difficult point：

To enable the students to use Adverbial Clauses in certain

situations with different tenses correctly.

Teaching procedures:

Step 1:Lead-in Good morning boys and girls! Today,we are going to have a grammar course. But don’t worry, it’s the grammar we have learned before. And today we just have a Review, OK? So, what’s the grammar? (Review of Adverbial Clauses.) To help you have a good review, we need to know the contents of this course…

Step 2: Definition of Adverbial Clauses

Students are supposed to complete the Definition of Adverbial Clauses on the PowerPoint.

状语从句是指在复合句中起状语作用，修饰主句中的谓语动词、形容词和副词的从句。

因在句中的作用相当于副词，故又称为副词性从句。

Step 3: Types of Adverbial Clauses Students are required to list different types of Adverbial Clauses by memorizing a jingle given by the teacher. 口诀：时地原因方式条，目的结果步比较。

Step 4:

Key and Difficult Points 状语从句一般由从属连词引导，从属连词在句子中不充当句子成分，只起连接作用。

准确掌握每一个连词的含义是掌握状语从句的关键。

Students are supposed to complete the following underlined parts. (1) 在时间状语从句中，当主句是一般将来时，从句用一般现在时。

He will call me when he arrives in Shanghai. 他到了上海就会给我打电话。

(2) when“当……时候，

正在那时……”

重点句型：

be about to do…when… / be on the point of doing…when…

“正要做……这时……”；be doing…when…“正在做……这时……”。

I was doing some cooking when the doorbell rang. 我正在做饭，这时，门铃响了。

(3) before

“在……之前；还没来得及……；很久……才；……不久就”

重点句型：It was /will be…before…“过了多久才……”/“还要多久才……”

It wasn’t/won’t be…before…“没过多久就……”

It will be half a year before I come back. 还要半年我才能回来。

It wasn’t long before I forgot it all.

没过多久我就全忘记了。

(4) since“自从……”。

重点句型：It is /has been+一段时间+since+一般过去时，

若从句谓语为延续性动词，意为“自从不……已经有多久”；

若从句谓语为短暂性动词，意为“自从……已经有多久”。

It is three years since he lived here. 自从他不在这儿住已经有三年了。

It is three years since he came back from abroad. 自从他从国外回来已经有三年了。

(5) not…until

“直到……才”。

I did not sleep until my father came back. 直到爸爸回来我才睡觉。

重点句型：It is/was not until…that…(not…until的强调句)

Not until…does/did sb. do…(not…until的倒装句) It was not until my father came back that I slept. Not until my father came back did I sleep. (6) “一……就……”no sooner…than, hardly…when

He had no sooner sat down than the phone rang. 他一坐下，电话铃就响了。

注意：no sooner/hardly引导的句子谓语用过去完成时，than/when后用一般过去时；

若把no sooner或hardly提到句首，其后的主句要部分倒装。

No sooner had he sat down than the phone rang. (7) 条件状语从句通常由

if, unless (如果不

; 除非), as/so long as (只要) 等引导。

unless (如果不

; 除非),引导的是否定条件状语从句，在意义上相当于if…not…

We can’t get there on time unless we book the earliest flight. = We can’t get there on time if we don’t book the earliest flight. 如果不订最早的航班，我们就不能准时到那里了。

(8) so…that, such…that (如此……以至于……)

so和such的区别:名前such,形副so,that从句跟在后；

many/much/little/few,多多少少必用so,

特别注意是little,小用such,少用so. Lily is such a lovely girl that everyone likes her. Lily is so lovely a girl that everyone likes her. 莉莉是一个非常可爱的女孩，大家都喜欢她。

We had so little time that we couldn’t finish the work on time.

时间太少了，我们没办法按时完成工作。

(9) even if/though(即使)

Even if he did say so, we could not be sure that he was telling the truth. 即使他真的这样说，我们也不能确定他说了真话。

(10) as(尽管，虽然引导的让步状语从句要倒装。

Difficult as the task was, they managed to finish it in time. 虽然这项任务很难，但他们还是设法及时完成了。

Step 5: Exercise

In this part，Students will be divided into three groups and have a competition. There will be nine numbers on the PowerPoint, and each one means one question. Each group will have three chances to choose one of them. If the student has the right answer, then the group will get some marks. But if wrong, then the other group will get the marks. Before the game, each group will be given one minute to decide which one to choose and who is going to answer the question. (1) I was about to tell her to get lost when the weirdest thing happened. (2) I did not really understand what he was saying until one afternoon when I was up in the sycamore tree.

(3) It was the first thing I saw every morning and the last thing I saw before I went to sleep. (4) If countries choose to close their doors and hide behind them, human civilizations(文明) would be cut off from each other and lose all vitality. 如果各国重新回到一个个自我封闭的孤岛，人类文明就将因老死不相往来而丧失生机活力。

(5) There would be no clash of civilizations(文明) as long as people are able to appreciate the beauty of them. 各种文明本没有冲突，只是要有欣赏所有文明之美的眼睛。

(6) It's not until you fall that you fly. When your dreams come alive you're unstoppable. (7) Keep it together, smile on your face even though your heart is frowning. As long as you love me.

(8) 等你有孩子你就知道了。

Wait until you have children! (9) 随着时间流逝，每件事情都会好起来的。

As time goes/passes by, everything will become better! If there are groups that has the same marks, then the teacher can turn to another question. (10) Unless you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.(Unless改
