Lesson Plan: Down by the Salley Gardens -- learn the English poem and song Chengdu No.49 Middle School

The General Idea This is the selected course which students can learn English by singing a song. In order to arouse students’ interest and let them appreciate the beauty of English，I will organize kinds of activities to improve students’ comprehension and let them sing a song.

Background information Students: 47 students from Class 1, Grade 1 Time duration: 40 minutes 2.

Step 1 Lead-in -- 3 mins

Activity 1

Story-telling

Purpose: to arouse students’ interest and introduce the poem T: According to the pictures and words given on the screen, tell the simple love story between the couple. S:Learn the background of the song

Step 2 Comprehension-- 20 mins Activity 1Feeling and Completion--4mins Purpose: to attract students’ attention and lead them to express their feeling T1: invite one student to read the poem aloud and play the music without lyrics S1: one student read, while others listen and complete the missing words in the task1 T2: ask students to guess the emotion shown in the poem and present a mind-map S2: express their ideas about the emotion shown in the poem

Activity 2Rhyme--6mins Purpose: to focus on some certain words as rhyme and recognize their function T1: play the video of this song to let students check the words they have written and

one question “how special are the words at the end of each line?”

S1: watch the video to check their answers and answer the given question T2: put these words into different groups and lead students to figure out their function S2: say something to answer the question “why is rhyme used in the poem?”

Task：Read the lines and answer Group1: meet / feet

Group2: tree / agree Group3: stand / hand

Activity 3

Translation--10mins Purpose:

to further reinforce the understanding of this poem and appreciate the different beauty of two languages T1: present the Chinese translation with given sample sentences

S1: group work to translate the missing sentence into Chinese and write it down T2:invite some students to tell their translation and show them the original one S2:express their opinion about different versions

T3:show another version of traditional Chinese poem T4:lead students to compare the languages of English and Chinese

Task: Learn the given Chinese translation. Translate the missing sentence into Chinese and share your sentence in the whole class. Down by the salley gardens my love and I did meet; 在莎莉花园深处，吾爱与我曾经相遇。

She passed the salley gardens with little snow-white feet. 她雪花般的纤足，向着花园尽头走去。

She bid me take love easy, as the leaves grow on the tree; _______________，_______________。

But I being young and foolish,with her would not agree. 但当年年少无知，不愿接受她的心语。

Step 3 Practice and sing-- 16 mins Activity 1

Poetry singing--4mins

Purpose: create a context to lead students to know the connection between the song and poem and introduce the song T1:act as the host of Everlasting classics and invite two lead singers to perform this song in the front of the whole class S1: two students act as the performers and sing the song for the whole class

Activity 2

Practice and sing--12mins Purpose: Students are able to sing the song with emotion T1: play the music twice and let students practice singing

S1: group work to practice singing and help each other

T2:divide the whole class into different rows and let them sing in rows S2:sing the song row by row and finally sing together Requirements: Students in the 1st row(排) sing the first line; Then, students in the 2nd row join in singing from the second line; Next, students in the 3rd row join in singing from the third line; ... Finally, everybody, Let’s sing the song together!
