The Road to Success

1. Analysis of teaching materials The topic of Unit 14 is Careers, aiming at guiding students to choose future careers based on personalities and learn how to prepare for a job interview and achieve success. Such topics interest the Ss greatly. The theme of this text is The Road to Success of Wang Junyan. The curiosity, diligence and commitment to the truth are the basement of her success. In this lesson, the students can not only know the way of Wang Junyan’s success, but also have a determination of their own learning and daily life by reading this text. Moreover, students should develop positive values about success after reading Wang Junyan’s story.

2. Analysis of students This lesson is designed for students of high school. Although they should have accumulated a certain amount of vocabulary after four-year learning, the students in our school are poor in vocabulary in fact. They still have difficulty in reading and also lack self-confidence in expressing themselves in English. Moreover, studying at high school, students will need to develop more independence and learning skills instead of waiting to be told what to do by teachers. So during the teaching process, I will regard the Ss as the nucleus of teaching and respect the individual differences by designing different activities and providing as many opportunities as possible.

3. Step 1.Warm up & Pre-reading (5m) 1. Ask the Ss to look at a few pictures about successful people and think about the question: What made them successful? (Purpose of my design: To arouse the Ss’ interests and provide them with opportunities to express their ideas orally by presenting visual pictures about successful people; )

2. Ask the Ss to predict the main idea of this article using the title, pictures and the first paragraph:

Q1: “What do you know about the girl from Paragraph 1? ”

(Write down key information on the blackboard such as her name, her job and qualities .) Q2: “What is the passage about? ”

(The passage may be about Wang Junyan’s road to success) (Purpose of my design: To improve the Ss’ ability of prediction and further arouse the Ss’ interests )

首先本校理科学生大多或自身懒散或畏惧英语而没有好的学习态度与习惯，正因为学生英语学习上畏难情绪较重，对成功之话题的拓展才更重要，教师须引导学生形成正确的积极的人生价值观，从课后的写作反馈看达到了预期效果；其次这些学生没有足够的词汇量，课堂上鼓励学生会话讨论的环节往往冷场，课堂气氛不活跃，也反映出平时此类训练较少之问题；另外，不熟悉白板教学且心理有些紧张而教学过程中出现一些瑕疵，平时须加强教学基本功学习。
