In this module, we mainly focus on traffic jams. However, we’ll mainly introduce several means of transport to the students, such as taxis, buses and trolleybuses, pedicabs and so on by ways of learning the reading passage Getting Around in Beijing in this period. Guidance】Under the guidance of the new curriculum standard of senior high school English teaching and the quality education, my lesson is closely connected with the application of the English language in our daily life in order to achieve the goal of helping the students build a positive attitude towards life. Besides, this lesson is designed to educate the students to develop a polite driving habit and learn to be considerate of the pedestrians after their learning the reading passage. Make sure that the students have realized that it is their duty to call on the people around them to drive in a courteous way.

【The Analysis of the Teaching Material】The topic of this module is Traffic Jam, so it is necessary for the students to learn about the means of transport in the first period. And then we’ll easily come to the central topic―traffic jam as a result of such a great number of vehicles on the road. Finally, it’s a good chance for us to advocate polite driving in our everyday life.

Thus, the main task of this period is to know about means of transport through the reading passage Getting Around in Beijing. Offered some pictures of the means of transport which the students are familiar with, the students are guided to learn how to express them in English first. Meanwhile, these pictures are functioned as a good way to arouse their interest. Next, different teaching strategies such as fast-reading and careful reading are designed to train and improve the students’ reading ability. Group discussions are also involved in to improve their communication skills and hold their attention.

【The Analysis of the Students】Some students are shy and quiet while some

others are active and talkative in class. What’s more, about one third of the students are able to express themselves fluently in English. There are still about ten students who have difficulty in learning English, though. Therefore, it is necessary to take these differences into account before the class and prepare proper tasks for them in order to achieve the goal of high learning efficiency in class. Ⅲ. The Teaching Goals

1) The Goals of Knowledge and Ability

a)Learn and master the words and useful expressions to express the means of transport in English correctly;

b)Get the main idea of the text and be able to accomplish the tasks given through fast-reading and careful reading, aiming to help students develop a good reading habit and improve their reading comprehension ability;

c)Train and improve the students’ listening skills;

d)Encourage the students to talk about our city’s means of transport with the help of the useful expressions learnt in this period.

2) The Goals of Process and Methods

a)Achieve the goal of improving the students’ skills for reading comprehension and communication by varied reading strategies, sentence-making as well as pair work and group work;

b)Improve the students’ integrating skills and cultivate their creativity during the process of learning and teaching;

c)Develop their sense of group co-operation during the learning process.

3) The Goals of Emotional Attitudes and Values

a)Offer the students an enjoyable lesson to help them keep a positive attitude towards life;

b)Educate the students to develop a sense of polite driving;

c)Help the students raise the awareness of a low-carbon lifestyle.

4)The Goals of the Application of the Multimedia

a)Create a vivid and lively learning atmosphere for the students’ learning English;

b)Arouse the students’ interest in English and stimulate their learning enthusiasm with the aid of the multimedia. Ⅳ. The Teaching Important and Difficult Points. 1)Get the main idea of the text;

Review the new words by doing the activity 3 page 13. Intention : To let the students consolidate the learned words and understand the text better. StepⅢ. Reading 1. Skimming Ask students to look through the text quickly and find out the subtitles. Intention : Individual work: to check if the students have got the basic information mentioned in the text and help the students develop a good reading habit. 2. pre-reading Let students look at a cartoon to understand the text.

Intention : Highlight of the reading comprehension: to summarize the theme of the passage and develop the students’ ability of making right logical deductions. 3.Careful reading Let students listen to the audio and read the text paragraph by paragraph carefully and finish the exercises

Intention : Pair work: to master some detailed information about each means of transport. 4.Post reading Ask students to complete the chart with their group mates.

Intention : Group work: a) to master some detailed information;

b) to develop the students’ sense of co-operation and improve their learning efficiency. 5. Consolidation Let students fill in the blanks. Intention : Individual work: to check if the students have mastered all the information mentioned in the text and help them understand the passage well. StepⅣ. Discussion & Speaking Let students make some sentences with the new learned means of transport. Which means of transport will you prefer if you travel to ……? Why?

Intention : Groups of four: a) ask the students to apply what they’ve learnt in class to their oral discussion so as to practice and improve their skills for communication; b) to improve the students’ integrating skills and

cultivate their creativity during the discussion; c) to educate the students to develop a sense of polite driving in order to avoid traffic jams or accidents. StepV. Summary and Assignment

1）Summarize the whole class. 2）Ask the students to write a letter to offer some suggestions to the tourists who are getting around in Beijing Ⅷ. Teaching Evaluation and Reflection on Teaching Efficiency

Students did quite well in most of the tasks. At the very beginning, they were attracted by the beautiful pictures showing different means of transport so that they concentrated all their attention on my teaching. Next, their learning enthusiasm was once more stimulated by the charming pictures showing some famous places of interest in Beijing, which helped me easily move to the targeted reading passage Getting Around in Beijng. Then, different reading strategies and teaching methods were adopted to train the students reading ability and improve their skills for reading comprehension. A consolidation task was offered at the end of the reading process to help the students understand the text well and check if they had mastered all the specific information offered in the text. Finally, the students were encouraged to have a heated discussion about the means of transport in groups of four using the useful words and expressions appearing in the reading text, which is helpful to develop the students’ sense of cooperation during the learning process. The discussion

also served as a good chance to create an active and pleasant atmosphere for the students’ high efficient learning. More importantly, it was wise for the teacher to help the students raise a sense of polite driving in our daily life at the end of the class in order to avoid or reduce traffic jams, making preparations for our next topic---traffic jam. During the whole teaching process, students were active to finish the assigned tasks and give me satisfying answers. All the tasks involved in both easy ones and difficult ones were carefully designed for students of different levels. Students did very well in the task for consolidation and launched a lively discussion at the end of the class, from both of which we could see that my teaching efficiency was well achieved.

However, there is still improvement in my teaching: I provided two sentence patterns for the students’ discussion for fear that they might have problems in expressing themselves in the discussion part. However, the students took an active role in the discussion and came up with some unexpected phrases and sentences to fully express themselves by group co-operation, which reminded me that it was better to have faith in the students and develop their potential rather than prepare sentence patterns for them in my class. I would offer more chances for the students to brainstorm and cultivate their creativity in my future teaching.
