I. Analysis of Teaching Material & Target Students 1.Text Analysis: The text is Module10 Unit3 in the English book from Grade7, which is pressed by Foreign language teaching and research press.The topic of this module is about holiday journeys. And this lesson is for Unit 3, so we mainly focus on the language point: Past simple wh-questions. In the last 3 modules ,we have learnt past simple tense. Of course ,in this module we focus on the past simple wh-questions. As a result, today’s lesson is based on a holiday journey in the past .

2.Students Analysis:

The students are seventh graders, they are active in thoughts and full of ideas .So they are interested in this topic and have command the relative words. But they have relatively limited skills in expressing themselves by using the proper form of the past simple tense. 3.Teaching designing idea:

This module is about holiday journeys. To make students get a better understanding of talking about holiday journeys, I’ll talk about my holiday journey in Xi’an three years ago for the students first. II. Teaching Aims 1.Knowledge Aims: 1) To get students to master the new vocabulary . 2) To get students to summarize and consolidate past simple wh-questions.

2.Ability Aims: 1) To develop students’ listening, speaking, reading and writing strategies. 2) To talk and write about their holiday journeys with past simple tense. 3) To come up with different kinds of creative ideas about holiday journeys and express them in details freely. 4) Learn to think critically and creatively .

3. Emotional Aims: Students will learn about holiday journeys and enjoy the happiness of them. Also students can learn and respect the different cultures and be encouraged to enjoy life .

III. Key points and difficult points According to the teaching objectives, The key points are to

a ) learn to cognize and define certain words as they are learning the text. b) have a good command of the structures of past simple tense through inductive method. c ) motivate the students think critically and creatively about holiday journeys. d) develop the students’ protecting the environment and respecting others’ culture.

The difficult points are to a )understand the past simple tense. b) use the past simple wh-questions to solve practical problems, especially to talk about their holiday journeys. c) obtain, promote, and create ideas individually.

VI. Teaching procedures: Task 1

Greet and lead- in

Step1 Greet Greet the students. Boys and girls, how are you today? I’m glad to see you here.

Step 2 lead in To lead in the class, the teacher will first let the students watch a short video and think about the question: What can you see in the video? The students will watch the short video carefully and say what they can see in the video. They may answer like this: I can see the Eiffel Tower.... The teacher will say: We can see some famous places in the video. So do you like going to visit the places? Yes, today we’ll talk about the holiday journeys. Purpose:

1)To activate the students’

background knowledge and the videos will arouse their interest. 2)To lead the students think about the holiday journeys in the past.

Task 2

Revision and reading

Step 1 Review

The teacher presents the dialogue which we have learnt in unit 1 and five questions about it.

1. Where did Betty go? 2. When did she go to Los Angeles? 3. Who did she go with? 4. What did they do there?

5. How did they go there? This conversation is about Betty's holiday journey .

Purpose:

1)In the dialogue , the questions will

help the students learn about Betty’s holiday journey and the meaning of the past simple tense . After appreciation , they will also know how to talk about holiday journeys. 2)The content of this dialogue makes it easy to lead in the following part --reading which is about Betty’s holiday journey.

Step 2 Reading

1.

The students will have some time to read the dialogue again and find the answers to the five questions from the dialogue: 1)

She went to Los Angeles. 2)

She went to Los Angeles two years ago. 3)

She went with her parents.

4) They went to Disneyland and she met Snow White and Mickey Mouse.

And then they went to Hollywood. They swam in the Pacific Ocean at Santa Monica. 5)They went there by plane. And tell us where the answers are one by one. Purpose: Students can

1) learn about the details about the dialogue Betty’s holiday journey.

2) improve the ability of reading for details. 3)The students will look at the sentences and learn to talk about holiday journeys by using the sentences.

The teacher will check the answers to the questions with the students and look at the answers(sentences) in the dialogue. The teacher will show the students some pictures of Los Angeles, Hollywood, Disneyland , Santa Monia as well as some information of them.

Purpose: Students can

1)learn some information about Betty’s holiday journey.

2)have a brief review about the past simple tense and past simple wh-questions which will help them better understand the structure of the past simple tense.

Task 3

Grammar Step1

Summarize the concept of the past simple tense 1.

The answers(sentences) will be shown to the students so that they are able to find the fact that what we can use to talk about something happened in the past or what happened to somebody in the past. Step 2

Summarize the sentence structure of past simple tense

1.

In unit 2, Betty talked about her another holiday in Paris. She used the following sentences:

1) I arrived by plane the day before yesterday.

2) We relaxed at home and began our tour of the city yesterday. 3) We went to the Louvre Museum yesterday.

4)We took a walk this morning. 5)We took the Paris underground to the Eiffel Tower this afternoon. 2.Through watching and thinking, the students summarize the structure of past simple tense from the sentences Betty used in unit2 to talk about her holiday journey in Paris. 3. Review the change of past simple regular verbs and irregular verbs.

Step 3

Summarize the time words of past simple tense 1.

From the sentences about Betty’s holiday journey in Paris given by the teacher, we know these expressions ,such as the day before yesterday, yesterday and today, can give us some tips of using past simple tense. 2.

Have students think about some other time expressions of past simple tense.

Purpose: During this part, the students learn the grammar in situations which related to themselves. That will be easy for the students to understand, find and summarize by themselves .They are motivated to learn the grammar.

Task 4

Language practice Step1

Language controlled use

1.The teacher asks the students to finish the exercises in the book(Activity 5) and then check the answers. Before that ,the teacher will lead the student to notice the time words of the sentences first. The students will 1)

finish the exercises.

pay attention to the time words of the sentences.

Purpose: To check the students command of time words and tell different tenses according to the time words.

2.The teacher asks the students to complete the sentences with the correct form of the words and then check the answers. Before that ,the teacher will lead the student to notice the correct form of the words first. Purpose: To check the students command of past simple tense and basic use of past simple tense.

Step 2

Language situation use

1.The teacher showed some pictures and talked about his holiday journey in Xi’an three years ago. Give the students a table about the topic My holiday journey. The teacher gives the students an example of himself about his holiday journey.

Purpose: The teacher’s journey is easy and interesting for the students to use the past

simple tense . They will be very active to know the teacher’s holiday journey.

Step3

Language free use

1.Make sentences. The teacher raises one question to the students: Can you talk about your holiday journey like me? First, let’s make some sentences like Where did you go on holiday? The students are going to make some sentences like the example. Of course, the past tense wh-questions will be made when they make sentences

2.Pair work. Get the students talk about their holidays with partners.

Students talk with their partners, according to the wh-questions on the PPT.

3.The teacher gives the students a table and have them finish the table while asking and answering the wh-questions about holiday journeys. Students should finish writing the table while asking and answering the wh-questions about holiday journeys. After talking and finishing the table, students will talk about their partners’

holidays according to the tables. Purpose: In this activity, they can talk about their holidays which make them excited and active. Of course, this kind of pair work can let the students share their own special ideas and appreciate each other.

Step4

Writing

1.

The teacher and the students summarize the wh-questions about our holidays. 2.

Group work. Discussion about how to write about your holiday. 3.

After the discussion, students will have some time to write an email about your holiday journey to Mr Wu. 4.

Students share their short passages about their holiday journey in class.

Task 5

Around the world 1.

The teacher presents Around the world and ask a question: What do people like to do during their holiday?

Students may answer: People like to do different things on holiday. Some like to learn about the places, some like to take photos of themselves in the places they visit, and some just like to take photos of the interesting things they see.

Task 6

Summary and Emotional education

So from around the world, holiday journey can help us learn about the places and people. We take photos of ourselves and things , which can bring us good memories.

Traveling can also make us relax and open our eyes to the world . But What should we pay attention to when we are travelling? Students may answer : 1.We should protect the environment. 2.We should pay attention to our safety. 3.We should respect others’ culture.
