Teaching aims：

Knowledge aims：

1. Let students grasp some new words and phrases from the listening material. 2. Let students get the main idea of the dialogue and make guesses. 3. Let students master modals used for guesses. 4. Let students practice using modals when guessing.

Students may have trouble distinguishing between modals used for guesses. 4. Students may also have problems with the bare, progressive and perfective infinitive after modals. Teaching method：

Step1Lead-in：

.Show students a picture of a boy’s watching news on TV and let students talk about what news they are most interested in, through the dialogue between teacher and students. Teacher：What is the boy doing？

Students：He is watching TV. Teacher : What is he watching on TV？

Students：He is watching news on TV

Teacher: Yes, do you often watch news on TV？if yes，what news are you most interested in ?

Students: We are most interested in…news.

Teacher : What about the criminal news? If you like it, Recently，more or less you should hear that someone is missing, especially our students. Right? Students: Yes. Teacher: Today we will talk about a missing event.

(Design intent: Let students understand what they will learn about the listening material through telling them some missing events recently. Then tell students they will learn a missing event in this lesson.) (2)

Let students look at the pictures about the dialogue and make guesses by answering the given questions1-3.(Design intent: Giving questions is to help students to make guesses about the pictures easily.) Step 2.Listening：

Before they start listening, students should read through the dialogue quickly to get an idea of the situation. (2)

Play the cassette for students to listen to complete the gaps and then again for them to check the answers together.

Step3.After-listening

Students read the dialogue quickly and get the main idea of the dialogue. Then answer the questions1-4. (2)

Emotional meaning:

From the dialogue, students should know: When someone has difficulty or trouble，we should care about him or her and stand on his or her feet. We can’t laugh at his or her misfortune. We should show our mercy to him or her. We should have a kind heart to this world. (3)

Students should find some sentences with modal verbs and underline these sentences in the dialogue. Then translate these sentences for others. (Design intent: let students grasp and pay attention to the meaning of the modals in these sentences by themselves.) Step 4.Grammar: (1)

Students discuss the meaning of these sentences and decide if they express decision, advice or guessing.(exercise 4,page 12) (2)

Work in pairs reading these sentences again and deciding which of the modals express strong belief and which express possibility.(exercise5,page13) (3)

As a whole class, students discuss what the sentences1-3 are referring to and match them with a, b and c.(exercise6,page13) (Design intent: By discussing and making comparisons among these sentences, students can make a conclusion about the modals used for guesses on their own.) (4)

Step 5.Doing exercises: (1)

Complete the gaps in the sentences with the modal verbs. Ask students to do the exercise individually or together , then check the answers by having them read the sentences aloud. (exercise7,page13) (2)

Rewrite the sentences using modal verbs and suitable verb forms. Ask students to do the exercise individually or together , and then compare answers in pairs or check the answers with others.(exercise9,page13) (3)

Do some multi-choice questions. Then ask students to do the exercise individually or together , and check the answers by having them read the sentences aloud.

(Design intent: Let students do a lot of exercises to make them grasp and consolidate the modal used for guesses. And let students use the modal used for guesses accurately )

Step 6.Speaking (show their opinion): (1)

Read through the examples and exchange ideas with the class. (2)

Students work in pairs，discussing their guesses about the people in the photos and talk about the present and the past. Then the pairs share their ideas with the whole class. (exercise11,page13) A: I think the old woman must be a nice person. B: Yes, I agree. And I think she…

(Design intent: through making the dialogue，students can use the grammar more directly and flexibly. Students can practice and improve their speaking skills and can also practice the skills of team-work. ) Step7. Summary：

Teaching reflection：

Teacher made full preparations for this lesson and used the multimedia to help students to grasp the grammar much better. Teacher also used question and answer method, and inquiry method to stimulate students’ thinking so that students could make conclusions by themselves. In the whole class, students could practice listening, reading and speaking skills and also did a lot of exercises to consolidate the grammar. A few students still didn’t take part in some activities and were not willing to join in some practical activities. Later, teacher should encourage these students to participate in activities as often as possible.

Generally speaking, the structure and the goal of the class are clear. The important and difficult points are shown well. Students can master the knowledge of the whole class very well. Still some aspects need to be improved. In the future, teacher should continue to explore and improve the teaching to be more perfect.
