Enable the students to describe his or her best friend and know how to describe a person. •

This lesson is for the Senior one students. They have already learnt some words which can be used to describe a person, but they do not know how to write such an essay. Listen to the song “best friend” and brainstorm “What your best have done for you?” and “Why friendship is so important?”

Then ask the students “Would you like to introduce your best friend to us?”

Then lead to our topic “How to write an essay ‘my best friend.’”

Step 2 Pre-writing (10 min) •

Ask the students “who is your best friend? Can you say something about him or her? Why he or she is so special” Then divide the class into groups to discuss the questions •

After discussion, encourage the students to talk about their best friend. •

Ask the students “In what aspects can we describe a person?”

“Name, age, appearance, personality”

“Can you give me some words?”

Appearance: short, tall, medium height, overweight, plump, slim, good-looking, plain, well dressed…

Personality: careful, kindhearted, considerate, creative, energetic, enthusiastic, faithful, generosity, honest, hard-working... •

Give students a model about the essay; let the students find the structure of the essay. Discuss with your group members. First paragraph: generally introduction, appearance Second paragraph: personality, some example Third paragraph: why he or she is special Step 3 Drafting (15 min) •

According to the results of students’ discussion, ask them to write the essay within 15 minutes.

Step 4 Revising (10 min) •

Ask one student from each group to read his or her essay in front of the class. Give the feedbacks in time. •

Vote in the class to choose the best essay •

Ask the students to revise their essay Step 5 Sharing & Summary (4 min) •

Ask students to share their essay with each other •

Make a brief summary of what we have learnt today. (How to describe a person…)

Step 6 Homework (1 min) •

Ask students to write the essay “My favorite teacher” according to what we have learnt today.
