B11U3 Finding the Correct Perspective （Reading and Writing)

The teaching plan can be divided into the following eight parts: analysis of the teaching material, analysis of the students, teaching objectives, important points and difficult points, teaching and learning methods, teaching procedures, blackboard layout and feedback.

Part I Analysis of the Teaching Material

1.

Type: The selected teaching material is taken from Unit 3 Finding the Correct Perspective (Reading and Writing), Book 11.

2.

Topic: It introduces us the story of Liu Xiaoming who failed the college entrance examinations. 3.

Characteristic: The article is rather long, so it is difficult for Senior 2 students to understand. Besides, exemplification and contrast are used in the article. 4.

Function: It can lay a solid foundation for students' reading, speaking and writing skills.

Part II Analysis of the Students Senior Two students are equipped with some English knowledge. They can think creatively and some of them have enthusiasm for English. However, they haven’t developed effective reading and writing habits. Some students lack confidence. What should I do: To inspire their interest;

To develop reading and writing strategies;

To encourage them to speak up confidently.

Part III Teaching Objectives According to the requirements of Key competencies and after the learning of the New Curriculum Standards, by the end of the class, the students will: 1.

understand the stories and learn to use some helpful words and expressions.

(Language ability) 2.

get to know more about anxiety and how to relieve anxiety. (Cultural awareness) 3.

consider a problem from different aspects and think logically, critically and creatively. (Thinking quality)

4.

develop and keep the interest in English and improve their reading and writing skills. (Learning ability)

Part IV Teaching Important and Difficult Points 1.

Teaching important points: To understand the text and konw more about themselves; To inspire their enthusiasm for English writing.

2.

Teaching difficult points: To complete all the tasks using different reading skills; To write a poster using what they have learnt in the class. Settlements: In order to emphasize the important points and overcome the difficulties, I will design different activities to help the students understand the article. As for the writing task, I will give some key tips as clues.

Part V Teaching methods and Learning Methods 1.

Teaching methods: Task-based Language Teaching; Communicative Approach. 2.

Learning methods: Self-independent learning; Cooperative learning; Group discussion. Purpose: To make the students the real master of the class while the teacher myself a director.

Part VI Teaching Procedures Step 1. Lead-in (4 mins) Do a questionnaire about anxiety; Let all the students evaluate themselves according to the chart. Purpose: To catch the students' eyes at the beginning of the class and give some background information.

Step 2. Jigsaw Reading (15 mins)

Fast reading: Go through the text for main idea and its structure. Careful reading: Find some detailed information to finish the exercises such as filling the blanks and retelling the story. Purpose: The latter tasks are harder than the former ones,which can deepen the students' understanding of the text and prepare for the following writing task.

Step 3. Group discussion (6 mins)

There are many causes of anxiety in the daily life. We need to prepare a plan for coping with a situation we fear as Xiaoming fears failing exams. Choose one situation and work out a plan of action which will make you feel better and not fear the

situation so much. Purpose: The students can think about the problem critically, which will develop a good thinking habit. Through brainstorming, they will be more creative and active for the following task.

Step 4. Cooperative Writing (12 mins)

Write a poster helping people relieve their anxiety.

I will give the basic steps of writing as follows: 1.

Analyze the situation; 2.

Explain the solutions; 3.

Improve your sentences; 4.

Finish your writing. Purpose: The students can know the important part cooperation is playing in our study and life. On the other hand, it can help them deal with anxiety.

Step 5. Summary (5 mins)

Let the students be aware that true health means both physical health and mental health.

Summarize the lesson by appreciating a poem named Don’t look down, look up together.

Step 6. Self evaluation and assignment (3 mins) There is a chart for the students to check what they have learnt and what they don’t understand. Purpose: Let the students evaluate themselves according to the chart to see whether the teaching objectives have been achieved.

Step 7. Homework

Find what you fear most; Think about some solutions to relieve your fear, maybe you can surf on the Internet for further information. Purpose: High-tech products should be made good use of. So I'd like students to surf the Internet for more information.

In the lesson, I used Task-based Language Teaching. But not all the students are of the same level. A few of them may have difficulty in some tasks. However, some other students may not get improved just through simple task. I hope I can find out some multi-activities for students of different levels to solve the problem.
