The first period: Warming up and reading The rules concluded in the earlier unit can be applied here to identify great women. Students should be encouraged to discuss what these great women did was useful for other people, and what problems they had to overcome or what they had to give up to achieve these ambitions.
Important points: let students learn about great women and their achievements in different fields in the world, and get students to read the passage and learn different reading skills. Knowledge aims: get students to learn useful new words and expressions: achievements, welfare, project, institute, specialist, connection, campaign, organization, behave, behavior, shade, worthwhile, nest, bond, observe, observation, childhood, outspoken, respect, argue, argument, entertainment, crowd, inspire, support, human beings, move off, lead a ….. life, crowd in
Step 1 Leading in Have a free talk with students. Ask them the following questions:
1) Do you know any great people or important people?
2) What makes a great person? (clever, brave, determined, confident, hard-working, unselfish, kind, generous. )
Step 2 warming up 1. Show some pictures of women for students to guess who they are and then talk about them. 1). Joan of Arc (1412-1431), France She was born in France, a girl from the countryside who dressed as a man and went to fight for the French and to drive the English out of France. She was caught and put to death by the English. 2). Elizabeth Fry (1780-1845), Britain She was a Quaker. She helped improve prison conditions and gave prisoners work and education. 3. Have a discussion in pairs what they have in common and what makes them great and give their reasons. For reference: As great women, they don`t care for themselves at all, and at some point or rather, they must give some sacrifices, just like Lin Qiaozhi, she devoted all her life to medical work for Chinese women and children and had chosen not to have a family of her own. Instead, she made sure that about 50,000 babies were safely delivered to

their mothers. Not all people can do this. Once they have chosen their careers, they would carry on with them without any withdrawal. What they did is encouraging thousands of people to continue their careers. Those who are only famous but not great can`t matched.

Step 6 Closing down by discussing Let students discuss the following questions: 1). What should we learn from Jane Goodall? 2). What made her a great success? 3). What do you think is the best way to protect the wildlife? For reference: (Wisdom and courage; deeply love for the animals; her consideration; her hard work. We think there are two points that made her successful. One is her way to study chimps, and the other is her true love for the animals. The first one is facile, because it is only a way. Everyone can do it. But for the second one, it is more easily said than done. As a woman, she gave up everything, went to the forest to study the chimps and devoted all her love to these animals. It is really not easy. What we cannot understand is that how she has such a great personality. We should call for all the citizens to love animals, protect their living conditions, forbid hunters to kill them freely, build more natural reserves for them and we should not disturb them. The national wildlife protection parks shouldn`t be open to the tourists.
Step 7 Homework Learn the useful new words and expressions by heart. Read the reading passage again and try to write something about Jane Goodall.

1. More than________ of the workers________ from Paris. A. ten percents; is
B. ten percent; are
C. three times; was
D. percents ten; comes
e.g.
(1) Most of the money has been wasted. (2) Every year, lots of damage is caused by fire. (1) Quantities of food are wasted every day. (2) Amounts of money were spent on this project. B 2. Not only I but also Mary and Jane ________ tired of having one examination after another.
A. is
B. are
C. am
D. be 知识依托:由not only…but also连接并列主语时,谓语与最靠近的主语保持一致。
3. Nobody but you________ what he said A. agrees with
B. agrees out
C. agree with
A 4. She is the only one among the ______writers who______ stories for children. A. woman; writes
B. women; write
C. women; writes
D. woman; write
错解分析:本题易误选B,误认为先行词为writers,而实际上由于one被the only修饰,故先行词是the only one,谓语应用单数。
eg. Mary is one of the students who were late for school. Mary is the only one of the students who was late for school.
eg. The writer and singer is my best friend. (2)each、
either、
one、
eg. Everybody is here. (3)由连词or、either…or、neither…nor、not only…but also等连接并列主语时及there be句式,There be句式中谓语动词应用就近原则。
eg. Neither you nor I am to blame.
eg. The United States is a developed country.
eg. The philippiness lie to the southeast of China.
eg. Each student has an English-Chinese dictionary. They each have an English-Chinese dictionary.
eg. Five hundred miles is a long distance. Twenty years have passed since he began to work here.
14
eg. His black trousers are too long.
