Teaching procedure

Step 1. Leading-in

Show the students a picture of flying Kongming lanterns and ask them a question:"What is the girl in the picture doing?"

The appropriate answer should be "Making a wish".

Then play a game "Draw what you hear". In the game, I will read some sentences about Xiaoming's wishes and the students need to draw a picture of it. The sentences are below. 

He wishes he could live in the countryside.



He wishes he had a big house in the countryside. 

He wishes there were three trees on the right of the house. 

He wishes there was a pool on the left of the house and some fish in the pool. 

He wishes there were some hills at the back of the house. 

He wishes there was a path in front of the door. 

He wishes he could have a sheep on the grassland. Then ask a few students to show their pictures to all of the classmates through the projector. Step 2. Review subjunctive mood about the present Show the a picture and ask them to make a sentence about it. The appropriate answer should be "I wish I was young." Then review subjunctive mood about the present 

Meaning/ function 

we use this structure to express a desire for a situation that does not exist right now in the present. A wish is a desire to change a real situation into an unreal 

Form 

I wish (that)/if only + simple past 

Were is used for both singular and plural subjects in a formal context. Native speakers use was

in spoken

one.

English/ informal contexts 

He wishes/if only he were younger. Then show them more pictures and ask them to make a sentence of each one.

He wishes he were taller./He wishes he could be taller.

She wishes she were thinner/slimmer.

He wishes he were richer.

He wishes he could be a musician.

He wishes he could be a super hero. Then 3 minutes to have a discussion"If there was one thing you could change about your body, what would it be?" Step 3. Review subjunctive mood about the past 

Meaning 

Regrets from the past. These are things that have already happened but we wish they had or had happened in a

different way. 

Or things that didn’t happen and we wish they had!



Form 

‘wish’ + past perfect



I wish I hadn’t given up my studies.

Then show a picture and ask them to guess the man's wish.

The appropriate answer should be "He wishes he hadn’t drunk too much last night." Then

task: Think back to when you were younger. Have you got any regrets? Tell your partner.
