Revision of simple past tense

Teaching aims By the end of the class, students will be able to 1.

Spell regular verbs and irregular verbs in simple past tense correctly. 2.

Use simple past tense to make sentences properly. 3.

Write a passage about their last trips with 6 components: where, when, who, how, how long and what. Anticipated difficulties 1.

Students may find it hard to use simple past tense correctly. Teaching procedures Step 1 Brain teaser (2 mins) T shows a picture with a girl named Lingling and introduce her to the Ss. Then ask Ss to change a word in a sentence to make Lingling disappear. T: Look at this girl. Her name is Lingling. She is standing in the forest, so I can say, ‘Lingling is here’. Now, I want you to change a word in the sentence to make Lingling disappear. T: Now let me give you a hint. I can change ‘is’ into ‘isn’t’ to make Lingling disappear. Can you find me another way? S1: Lingling was there. T: Excellent! So today we are going to review something about simple past tense. T introduce definition of simple past tense. Step 2 Revision of verbs in past tense (15 mins) [Task 1] Spell the following words in the past tense play played Work worked live lived smile smiled study studied marry married nod nodded hug hugged stop stopped

After Ss finish the task, T explains about rules of regular verbs in the past tense. [Task 2] Look at the following irregular verbs and find out some rules. T: Look at the following irregular and please notice the end of the words and the change of some letters. Ss talks about the rules they found under the guide of T. T: So next time when you try to remember the irregular verbs, I think you should divide them into groups like this to help you remember them in an easier way, right?

Lingling wants to talk about her last trip. Look at the following pictures and help her write a passage about her trip. Where did Lingling go? When did Lingling go? Who did she go with? How did she go there? How long did she stay there? What did she do there? T: So when we want to write a passage about our trip, we need to think about six questions: where, when, who, how, how long and what. Now let’s read a possible version of Lingling’s last trip.

Step 4 Free talk (5 mins) T asks students to finish a mind map based on three questions: Which school will they go to in the future? What will you do in the future? Where will you travel in the future? Step 5 Write a passage (17 mins) T asks students to write a passage about their last trips on the pad. After Ss submit their works, choose 2-3 pieces to show.
