Teaching objectives: At the end of the lesson, students are expected to



understand the meaning of some new words according to the context or by pictures. (phantom, opera, beneath, mask, force ,wander,monster, suffering, release,etc.) 

know the characters, setting and plot of the story by using different reading skills such as skimming and scanning.



have more interest in reading novels and enjoying operas.

Pre-reading：

1.

Have a free talk about the opera. 2.

Look at the pictures and learn some new words.

While-reading：

1. Skim the whole passage to know the setting and characters of the story . 1) Fill in the form. 2) Discuss the relationship between the characters.

2. Scan P2 and answer some questions about the phantom. 1）What was the Phantom’s mother’s reaction when she saw her ugly son? How ugly

was he?

2.）Why did the Phantom stay out of her sight?

3.How could the Phantom make himself so strong? Why did he make himself strong?

4.Which sentences show that the Phantom was really a lonely man?

3. Scan the rest of the paragraphs to fill in the blanks by writing down some key words, mainly verbs. 1) Reorder the events the phantom did for Christine? 2)

Fill in the blanks about what the Phantom did to Raoul and what Raoul did for Christine. 4. Discuss in groups and find some adjectives to describe Phantom/Christine/Raoul with proof from the passage. Post-reading 1. Retell the story from various persperctives. Assignment 1.

Listen to the tape and read the story at least three times. 2.

Finish the exercise paper.
