Michelangelo was born on March 6, 1475 in a village of Italy. He was one of the most important artists of the Italian Renaissance, a period when the arts and sciences

flourished. Michelangelo became an apprentice to a prominent painter at the age of 12, but soon began to study sculpture instead. He attracted the attention of the ruler of Florence.

He began work on the figure of "David" in 1501, and by 1504 the sculpture (standing at 4.34m/14 ft 3 in tall) was in place outside a huge palace in Florence.

The statue became a symbol for the new republic. Michelangelo made David partly as the ideal man, partly as a teenage youth, Michelangelo posed David at the moment he faces the giant enemy, with the deed before him. He believed this was the moment of David's greatest courage.

From 1508 until 1512 Michelangelo worked on his most famous project, the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican. He had always considered himself a sculptor and resisted painting the Sistine "I cannot live under pressures from patrons who supported artists financially." Only the power of the Pope Julius II forced him into the great works of the world's greatest single fresco.

(paintings on the wall)He covered the ceiling with paintings that showed 9 scenes from

the Old Testament(旧约). Michelangelo later painted "The Last Judgment" on the

altar(祭坛)

wall of the

Sistine Chapel.

Toward the end of his life, Michelangelo became more involved in architecture and poetry. In 1546 he was made chief architect of the partly finished St. Peter's Basilica (长方形基督教堂) in Rome.

III. Speaking practice 1. What’s your first impression when you looked at Michelangelo’s works? 2. Imagine you were Michelangelo, what was on your mind when you were all alone in the lonely chapel for 4 years? 3. And what do you think leads to Michelangelo’s great success?

IV. Reading & speaking practice 1.

Figure out the title of the writing---fast reading. 2.

Of the 3 steps toward success, which one, in your opinion, is the most important, and why?

?

Success is something that everyone wants to achieve, but not everyone can make it even though he has tried his best. Why? I think the reason is that they haven't found the right way to success, so they don't know how to achieve success. In my opinion, there are three steps to success.

The first one is to decide what you want and set a deadline(制订最终期限). Knowing what you want is very important. Then try to decide exactly what it's the real thing you want in each part of your life and become a "meaningful specific". After that, you should set a deadline for your goal. A deadline acts as a forcing system(强制体制)

in your mind. It

motivates (激励)you to do the things necessary to make your goal come true. If it's a big enough goal, set sub-deadlines(其次重要的最终期限)

as well. Don't leave this to chance(听之任之).

Making a list and organizing

(组织)your list is the next step. As we know, making a list of everything that you can think of that you are going to have to do to achieve your goal (实现目标)can help you see the distance to success. Then organize your list into a plan. Decide what you will have to do first and what you will have to do second. Decide what is more important and what is less important.

The last step is to take action. Remember: Practice makes perfect. Only thinking without action has no use for you to achieve success. When your preparation is all ready, you must take action to get your goal. In some cases, action means more than your thoughts. So do something every single day that moves you in the direction(在。。。方向)

of your most important goals at the moment.

These are three powerful steps that you can use to set and achieve your goals for the rest of your life. If you stick to them(坚持), I'm sure you'll be a success.

V. Homework 1.look at the reading material about achieving success again. 2. review the new words learned in this lesson. 3. review U2
