Knowledge aims: Students learn about: 1.
Four new abilities: run, hop, swim and walk.
Ability aims:
Students are able to: 1.
Talk about the abilities and discuss whether they are able to do all of them or not.
2.
Pronounce the words. 3.
Have a clear understanding of the different abilities. 4.
Name other abilities.
Emotion aims:
Students develop: 1.
An interest in abilities. 2.
An interest in improving their own abilities. 3.
Learning new abilities.
Specific learning outcomes:
New words: run, hop, swim and walk.
New sentence structures: Allow students to form sentences based on questions we have learnt in previous units.
Previous knowledge: Students should know a few other abilities such as read, play, etc…
Difficult points:
Explaining the differences between the abilities.
Using the ability words within a sentence.
Getting students to remember the new words.

PowerPoint Presentation, flashcards.

Step 1: Warm-up

Greetings. 2.
Three-minute show.

Begin by asking students what they can do which will lead nicely into the abilities.
5–15 Step 2: Revealing the new abilities. 1.
Use the Powerpoint Presentation to show the new abilities and allow students to raise their hands and say what ability it is.
2.
Pronounce the words and check that students are able to repeat without any obvious mistakes or pronunciation issues.
Students listen carefully to the three minute show. Ask students to talk about what they can do including previously learnt things such as playing soccer and riding bikes.
Students answer the teacher by saying the new animal name.
Show the pictures of the new abilities and see if students can name and spell the animal names.
Repeat the words after the teacher.
Students practice reading the four new words with the teacher and individually. Ask students to stand up individually to read out the words. Ask students what sounds certain letters make for phonics practice. Students first listen to the teacher and repeat. Students then work in pairs asking and answering.
Students also spell words. 15–25 Step 3: Pronunciation and phonics practice. 1.
Show students the flashcards of the new abilities and get them to follow and repeat.
2.
Pay special attention to the phonics and break the word up to help with pronunciation.
25–35 Step 4: Group work.
1.
Give students examples of asking and answering. “What can you do? I can run.”
2.
Then spell out the word “r…u…n
followed by reciting run… run.
3.
Students ask each other while answering ones use the new abilities.
35-40
Stand up in pairs and the rest of the class listens. Teacher corrects any pronunciation issues.
Step 6: Final wrap
1.
Teacher repeats the words again using the flashcards and by pointing and repeating to the words on the blackboard.
Students help to spell the words and follow the teacher in pronouncing.
