Teaching procedures Step 1: Lead in

Good afternoon, class. Before we start, let’s read the learning methods on the screen together.

Today’s topic is the power of nature. It means that sometimes the nature is so powerful that it will cause some natural disasters.

First, let’s play a game. Look at some pictures and guess what kind of natural disaster they are. Are you ready?

Earthquake, drought, thunderstorm, snowstorm, sandstorm, flood, tsunami, tornado... Step 2: Warming up

Next, let’s watch a short video to know more about it. After watching it, I’d like to ask you to answer the questions.

What disaster happened? When and where?

Step 3: Reading

Task 1 Skimming: Skim the text quickly and answer the following questions.

What is the writer? Where did he work? When did he see a volcano eruption? Does the writer love his job? Task 2 Listening and reading: Match the main idea with each part.

Para1-2

He’s still enthusiastic about his job.

Para 3

What damage the eruption can cause. Para 4

How he had a closer look at the crater after the eruption.

Para 5

His job as a volcanologist. Task 3 Details: Read each paragraph carefully, then answer the questions.

1. Read para 1 and 5:

2

Whatever you do, put your heart into it.

What shows that the author likes his job? 2. Read para 2:

As a volcanologist, what is the duty of the writer? 3.

Read para 3: What made the author realize that an eruption happened?

4.

Read para 4:

What did they wear when getting close to the crater? What did they do after the eruption?

Step 4 Summary: Invite some students to make a summary of the text with the help of blackboard design.

Step 5 Role play: Discuss the following questions in groups and then make an interview and act it out.

Do you want to be a volcanologist?

If so, give your reasons.

If not, What is your dream job? Are you fit for it? How can you make yourself fit for it?

EXAMPLE Job-seeking: Volcanologist

Interviewee:

Student A

Interviewer A: Student B

Interviewer B: Student C

You may introduce your role first and begin like this: A: Good afternoon, honorable interviewers. My name is... I’m here to apply for the job-volcanologist.

B:

Have a seat, please. I'd like to ask you some questions. Why do you...?

A:Because... C: Do you like...? ... B: Thank you. We will inform you of the result later.

Step 6 Read the following sentence together. No matter what we do, we should put our heart into it, and be enthusiastic about it. Step 7: Homework 3

Whatever you do, put your heart into it.

1.

Write a short summary of the text in your own words.
