Content: The passage is a narrative of ancient Greece. 2.

Discourse : It is a narrative；

Grammar: It mainly uses the simple past tense. It also uses some modal verbs, e.g. He could not believe his eyes.

Vocabulary: there are some words about legends, such as triumph, statesmanlike and so on. 1. Language ability: Students can learn reading skills, skimming, scanning. Ss can learn some new words, such as fried rice, bacon and so on. 2. Cognitive/ thinking ability: Be able to use critical thinking. a. Be able to find the truth based on the facts and opinions in the text. b. Be able to build up our own opinion by comparing different facts. 3. Learning ability: be able to predict what will happen after the story. 4. Cultural character: be able to understand the plot by presenting a shadow play. Key points: Let Ss know the structure of the passage and play a shadow play. Difficult points: 1.

Content:

It’s difficult for students to arrange the information and know the structure of the passage. T lists the main idea of each part and let Ss match them. 2.

Step 1: Lead-in (3 minutes) 1.【Activity】: T presents the map of Greece and the Aegean Sea. 【Purpose】：Ss can know the location of different countries and lessen the difficulties of reading.

1. 【Activity】: T shows the food pyramid and divides it into three kinds of food. And T conclude that a healthy diet is equal to energy-giving food, body-building food and protective food.

【Purpose】：Ss can know about the food pyramid and a balanced diet, which can pay the way for the later activity.

Step 2: Pre-reading

(4 minutes)

1. 【Activity】:Skimming. Step 3:While-

reading T asks Ss to skim the passage and answer the following question. Ss can pick the color (15 minutes) they like to answer. 【Purpose】: Ss can know the basic information of the passage. 2. 【Activity】: Task 1: Skimming. The relationship of the characters. 【Purpose】: Ss can know the structure and the relationship of the characters through skimming.

3. 【Activity】: Task 2: Scanning. A Rubric of Our Shadow Play T asks Ss to divide into three groups and play a shadow play according to the text..

【Purpose】: Ss can try to arrange information by themselves and train the learning ability.

4. 【Activity】: Task 3: Scanning. Were Cyclops and Circe friendly to Odysseus and his men? Ss discuss can fill in the information. 【Purpose】: Ss can know more detail of the text.

Step 4: Post- reading （20 minutes）

1.【Activity】: Group Work: Discussion. 3.Imagine you are Odysseus’ son, Telemachus. Try to persuade Poseidon to believe Odysseus was a great man and save Odysseus. Learn to analyse and build up your own opinion by comparing:
