Personalities and Jobs Hello everyone:

Today I'm very pleased to have an opportunity to talk some of my teaching ideas. My topic is listening and speaking. It 's taken from lesson 2 of unit 13 in Module 5 and the title is personalities and jobs. It is made up of 3 parts.

Part 1 :

The analysis of the teaching material

This lesson is the second part of unit 13, and it's a typical listening and speaking lesson. It mainly involves the output of the language.The main contents include the personalities and jobs of different people. So the students should master some new words about personalities and jobs. In this lesson the students will listen to a class discussion, in which the teacher asks the students about their opinions on personalities of different people. Therefore, the students should learn to use listening strategies to identify the speakers' ideas and opinions. Meanwhile , as a teacher, I should help them improve their speaking abilities, using some new words and expressions to express their opinions. These are some knowledge and ability aims I want to achieve in my class. Of course, the students should receive some emotional education: help them choose their suitable jobs in the future according to their personalities

and interests.

Part 2 :

The analysis of the students

The students have learned English for several years and have mastered a certain number of vocabularies. However, they are poor in listening and speaking, especially they are afraid to speak English in public. So I should encourage them to speak in class to improve their speaking abilities. And it's also my teaching difficult point.

Part 3 :

Teaching procedures

Step 1. Pre-listening (5 minutes )

First, warm up and lead-in

Present some phots and ask the students to guess what jobs they do.

( conductor

butcher

farmer

teacher

nurse

scientist...)

Then list some adjectives from students to describe personalities required for these jobs.

( athletic

unselfish

confident

independent

neat

responsible )

Purpose : Lead in the related topic and vocabularies. What's more, arouse the students' interest in talking about their personalities and future jobs.

Then, review new words and phrases

Let the students do Exercise 3 on page 10 : Complete each sentence with a word from the key words box.

Purpose : make sure the students have mastered new words and make preparations for listening materials.

Step 2. While-listening (15 minutes)

First, let the students go over the listening strategies and get some more new words related to the discussion.

Then, the first listening : let the students listen to the class discussion for the first time and find out what jobs are mentioned.

Purpose:

Train the students' abilities to get the key words and understand the general idea of the listening material.

Next, the second listening: listen for the the second time and answer the questions in exercise 4 on page 10. While listening write down speakers' opinions about the characteristics. After listening, I will ask some students to answer the questions in EX4.

Purpose: Using the listening strategies to get more details.

Last listening : listen to the material again . Let the students write down at least 5 ways of giving opinions. And they should pay attention to the speakers' intonation and stress. ( collect

the students' answer and show on the screen )

Purpose:

Summarize some sentence patters of expressing opinions and practice using suitable intonation in conversations.

Step 3. Post-listening and practice speaking ( 10 minutes )

Students work in groups and make up a dialogue to talk about jobs, using the words and expressions to express their opinion.

Then let some volunteers present their dialogue.

Example :

A : what jobs do you like to do ?

B : I like to be a ...

A : why do you like that job?

B : Because ...

A : Sound great ! But it seems to me that ...

B : To some extent , I agree , but ...

Purpose:

Use the new words and sentence patterns to express their own opinions and develop their speaking ability.

Step 4. Summary

Briefly summarize this lesson

Step 7. Homework

Do exercise 1 on page 56 :

Use the draws and the context to describe some people.
