I. Analysis of the teaching materials:

The content of this lesson is a story based on Unit6 Part C of PEP Book4. It talks about Zip’s family. The main purpose of t his lesson is to lead the students to understand the whole story and cultivate the emotion of loving and understanding each other in the family. It can also arouse students’ interests of learning English.

II. Analysis of the students:

The students from Grade4 are about 10 years old, they are very active and interested in reading stories. They have a certain ability to read. It’s not very difficult for them to understand the story. But due to the limit of their knowledge level, some of them can’t express their opinions in English freely.

III. Teaching objectives:

After this class, students are able to:

1.understand the whole story, imitate the conversation and act it out.

2.develop their abilities of imagination and prediction.

3.retell the story with the help of the mind map.

4.know they should love and understand each other in the family. IV. Teaching important and difficult points:

Step1 Pre-reading

1.Greet the students.

2.Let’s sing a song “My family”.

Designing purpose: create a relaxing atmosphere before class.

3.Play a game: whack-a-mole.

Designing purpose: students review the words by playing games. It can arouse students’ interest and attention of further learning.

Step2 While-reading

1.Listen and guess the story.

Designing purpose: help students get familiar with the story in whole by listening.

2.Students read Picture1 and try to find who they are, and where they are.

3.Read Picture2 to show photos of Zip’s family.

Designing purpose: help students know the character and the place of this story.

4.Read Picture3-Picture6 in details.

Students read the story and fill in the table.

Check the answers and finish the mind map.

Designing purpose: guide students to get some detailed information by careful reading. The mind map is helpful for students to understand the story better, furthermore, it will help students retell the story without a book.

5.Listen and imitate.

Students listen to the recording and then imitate after the tape. Designing purpose: get students involved in the story, pay attention to their pronunciation and intonation.

6.What’s the title of the story?

Students can think and voice their opinions.

7.Students recall the story according to the picture.

Designing purpose: help students remember and understand the story. 8.Conclusion.

Sum up the story with the help of the mind map.

Designing purpose: have students know the story as a whole, and consolidate the contents students have learned.

Step3 Post-reading

1.Role-play.

2.Group work.

Retell the story or continue the story.

3.Encourage the students to share their group work.

Designing purpose: let students cooperate with each other to finish the task. It can also arouse students’interest and stimulate students to communicate with each other in English.

Teaching reflection:

In this lesson, reading and speaking are the main content. First, in order to help the students understand the story better, I guide them to predict and put forward some questions. I divide reading into two parts. Students use skimming to get the general idea and scanning to find some detailed information. This is a good way to increase the students’ interests

and

concentrate their attention. When they learn some new words and sentences, I adopt the TPR method to make students active and study in fun. As for post-reading, I encourage students to role play and work in group. Combining knowledge output and input, the whole class is a stage for the students to present themselves. This is a good way for them to study English. Anyway, as teachers, to make our English class shine with vitality, we are laid with heavy burden, and we still have a long way to go.
