Teaching aims: By the end of the class, students will be able to 1. know about more legend stories of ancient Greece. 2. analyze a story from different angles. 3. use appositive, appositive clauses, non-restrictive attributive clauses to do explanation and use words with negative prefixes to express feelings while writing a story.

Key and difficult points: 1. How to help the students figure out the basic elements of a story in such a long passage. 2. How to make the students use what they’ve learnt to rewrite or do continuation writing.

Teaching methods：jigsaw; task-based approach

Teaching procedures: Step 1

Leading in 1. Show some pictures from the movie Troy, and let the students guess where these photos are from. 2. The students are very familiar with the original reason of The Trojan War, so let one student to tell the story of Gold Apple. 3. Let the students know some idioms in English coming from the story of the Trojan War, then give a brief introduction to Odysseus.

Step 2

First reading The whole passage is divided into 4 parts, and the students are also divided into 4 groups. Each group will get one part respectively. The students can talk with their groupmates about the settings, characters and plots of their part.

Step 3

Second reading After the first reading, each students will be given a number. Then the students with the same number will form a new group. The new group consists of the students who has read different parts of the passage. Then they will exchange what they’ve read to fill in the information gap.

Step 4

Language points There are many language points in this passage. In order to help the students to imitate afterwards. In this part, only appositive, appositive clauses, non-restrictive attributive clause and words with negative prefixes are focused .

Step 5

Writing task In this part, the students are given two options to do some writing. Option 1: Remember that the same story can become different when it is seen from another point of view. Imagine Odysseus retold the stories from his own point of view. Try and help him explain his behavior. Find what the Cyclops and Circe did to hurt Odysseus and his men. Option 2: What will happen next? Will Odysseus be back? Could Telemachus find him? What about Telemachus’ mother? Will his kingdom split into smaller ones? Write an epilogue.

Step 6

Summarizing

3-2-1 method of summarizing Ask the students to think about three things they’ve learned, two things that they are interested in and one question they have about what was taught in this class.

Step 7

Homework 1. Try to finish or polish your composition written in the class. 2. Try to learn more information about Odysseus and search for more idioms and expressions in English which comes from legends of ancient Greece.
