Therefore, in this lesson,I will assist my students to master the following strategies: Practice strategy;
Communication strategy;
Reading Strategy.
Teaching procedures:
Step 1. Lead-in
Two pictures of Ke Zhengdong and Mr. Bean are shown to students to help them have a better understanding of first impression. Qs: 1)What first impression do you have upon the two men?
2) What can you conclude from the two pictures?
then help them to draw the conclusion: First impressions are not always right.
Step 2. Fast reading: skimming and scanning Q1: Who are the two girls? Q2: Where did the story happen?
Q3: Did the writer have good first impressions on the tall girl?
Q4:What is the style of the passage? What is the structure of the passage
Part1: Paras__1-3___
Jane's first impressions on Jenny
Part3: Paras_4-5_
The change of Jane’s feeling
Part4: Para_6-_7__
Jane and Jenny became good friends. Step 3. Careful reading
Ask students to read the text carefully to get some detailed information about the text. Then ask them to find out Jane’s first and later impression upon Jenny.
Q;What kind of person do you think Jenny is?
Then analyse the characteristics of Jenny based on the information in the text.
2 / 3
Ask the students to figure out the theme of the passage. Step 4. Consolidation Ask students to decide if the two statements are true or false ,then induce them to find out the rules of reading between the lines. Step 5. Summary Ask students
to retell the passage according to the six factors of the narration. Step 6. Extension First impressions are not always reliable. Tell the students some examples about the severe mistakes of first impressions. Then draw the
conclusion: We should not judge a person from our first impression, but from our thinking and long-time observations. Sep 7. Assignment Please work out ways of making great First impressions. Or write a short story of your first impressions upon a person. Choose one of the tasks.
Teaching reflection: Advanced technology has greatly increased our life pace, so we have not enough time to observe others. To some extent, “Fall in Love at First Sight”
becomes more and more popular. We place great importance on first impression, but is this first impression really reliable? According to the understanding of the text, first impression is not always worthy of dependence, especially when you make an important decision. However,in our daily life, we often judge others by first impressions and sometimes the conclusion of these judgments mean the difference between life and death. For example: When approaching a job interview or visa interview,or other business meetings, first impressions can mean the difference between success and failure. Sometimes the conclusion can even mean the difference between life and death. So we should be cautious when contacting with strangers, especially those people get to know through the Internet.
