Step I Revision and Lead-in

Check the homework.

Talk about email writing.

T: Nowadays emails have become very popular. It is a very useful tool for us to communicate with others. It is very common for us to write emails to exchange information. It saves us lots of time and money. So we should learn to write emails to communicate with our friends. But how to write emails and reply to a friend’s email? Today, we’ll learn about it.

Step Ⅱ

Writing Task 1: Read the email and answer the questions T: Please open your books at page 72.

First read the email from Bruno. And try to finish the task in pairs in Activity 15 in Speaking and writing. Sample dialogues:

A: Why was it written? B: Because he wants to get some help from Thomas. A: What relationship do the two people have? B: They are friends. A: Is it fairly formal or informal? B: It’s fairly informal.

A: Where is the writer going? B: He’s going to China.

1

A: What job is he going to do? B: He’s going to be an English teacher during the holiday.

A: What does he want to know? B: He wants to know about social rules in China. Task 2: Make notes

T: Before you write a reply in email to your friends, you had better make notes about what your reply will be about. Next please finish Activity 16 in pairs. Sample answers:

1. It must be very exciting, I think. 2. They are going to live in a dorm. 3. He doesn’t need to give presents to the teachers. 4. He doesn’t need to bring too many things except the necessities. In China, there is almost everything that is needed. Task 3: Writing

Ask the students to do Activity 17.

A sample version:

Dear Bruno, Thanks for your email. Very glad to know that you are going to China. Your trip must be exciting, I think. China is a great country. People there are very friendly. I’ve been to China many times. When people meet each other for the first time, just shake hands or say “Hello” in a friendly way. You don’t need to give presents to the teachers that you’ll meet. Chinese students want to talk about music, sports, films, education in English-speaking countries (You know, many Chinese students want to go abroad for further education, so they are enthusiastic about this.), the lives of the students of the same age, traditional food in your countries and so on. What’s more, they are eager to learn English well, so you should give them effective ways of study and good advice. Besides, you don’t need to bring too many things except your own necessities. In China, there is almost everything that is needed. I hope you will have a good journey. All the best. Thomas Step Ⅲ

Reading and Writing

T: Now read the email on page 7 and then write a reply to it. A sample version: Hi, how are you, Alex. It’s a long time since I heard from you. Very nice to hear from you again. Thank you for your interesting email. Of course I would like to give you some suggestions.

First, in China people usually ask about each other’s name, job, family, even wages and so on. But women tend to avoid talking about their own age and weight. They will be unhappy to answer such questions. Most Chinese teenagers like talking about sports, music or film stars. They are also curious about the lives of those children of the same age in other countries. Most of them don’t like talking about politics.

I don’t know if my answers can satisfy you. I hope this information has been useful.

Best of luck at the Chinese Embassy. Looking forward to hearing form you again soon. Li Hua

T: When you write emails, you should know what you would tell your friend. Most of the time, you don’t need to pay more attention to your grammar. But you should not make too much mistakes in case your friend can not understand you. And always remember to greet your friend at the beginning and at the end send him good wishes, 2

he will be very glad.

Step

Ⅳ

Homework Finish Activity 18 on page 72. Sample version 1: Social Etiquette (礼节) in Australia There is no better way of life in the world than that of the Australian.

Australian rules of social etiquette are a little different from most countries around the world. The rules do not relate to how a fork should be held, or who should be served first at a dinner table. Instead, most of Australia’s rules relate to expressing equality.

Basically, as long as you appreciate that Australians want to be treated as equal irrespective of their social, racial or financial background, anything is acceptable.

The relaxed attitude of Australians has been known to cause problems. Because Australians are difficult to offend, they are not sensitive to causing offence in others. To outsiders, Australians often appear very rude. They tend to call a spade a spade. So when you are there, you should try to get used to it. Sample version 2: Some Social Rules in Japan In Japan you should bow to others while greeting by saying “good morning, good afternoon or good evening”. You have to learn to eat with chopsticks. And you must get used to sleeping on tatami. If you are not clear about what you should say, you’d better not speak much until you understand the way Japanese speak to each other. Japanese use different moods while speaking with different people. For example, while you are talking with people who are older than you, you should use more polite words. Speaking with family members and with foreigners is quite different.
