The Road to Success

1. Analysis of teaching materials

The theme of this text is “The Road to Success”, representing Wang Junyan's success. The curiosity, diligence and

commitment to the truth are the basement of her success. In this lesson, the students can not only know the way of Wang Junyan’s success, but also have a determination of their own learning and daily life by reading this text. Moreover, students should develop positive values about success after reading Wang Junyan’s story.

2. Analysis of students This lesson is designed for students of high school. Since they learned English as second language for some years, they have accumulated a certain amount of vocabulary and established a certain capacity of language organization. They have some knowledge of reading, speaking, listening and writing skills; all of these have laid the foundations for learning this lesson.

However, studying at high school, students will need to develop more independence and learning skills instead of waiting to be told what to do by teachers. And in this class, students should also improve their reading abilities by using scanning and skimming strategies.

Greetings and lead-in

1) First I’d like to show some pictures of people which are familiar to the students. Then I’ll guide the students to find out their common points —

Step 3. Words guessing Guess the meanings of some key words chosen from the text.

I put the key words into sentences which describe some careers, and it will help the students understand the meanings easily. 1) Students: The teacher speaks so quickly that I can’t grasp the importance of his words. grasp:

Step 4. Careful-reading

Read the text quickly and answer some questions about the text. 1) In Wang’s opinion, what made her a success?

2) What did Wang Junyan do with her mother that taught her to be curious? 3) What special moment made Wang Junyan realize the importance of being a journalist? 4) What does Wang Junyan like most about being a reporter? 5) What does Wang Junyan’s story tell you about success?

Step 5. Interview Ask students to think of successful persons in their class and then invite three of them to the front. Next, divide the rest into some groups and the group leaders can ask the three students questions on behalf of their groups.

Step 6. Appreciation

1) Watch a short video clip about a famous athlete and ask the students whether he can be called a success.
