Teaching Design Section I The Choice of the Teaching Materials Centered around the core qualities of senior high school English subject and based on the students’

psychological needs, the prose “Defeat”

written by Kahlil Gibran is selected. Different from ordinary people’s eyes, the prose view defeat in life as a good thing, bring various benefits. This is exactly why the teacher chose it, hoping to infect the students with the optimism. Section II The Analysis of the Students’ Need After one year’s study in this highly competitive school, students came to new classes with their choice of science in their future. Their mental state is still unsettled. Senior two is a hard challenge for them due to frequent exams and quizzes. They are confronted with big or small defeats, some even bearing obvious mind trouble. Therefore, how to deal with defeat is just what the students need. Section III. Teaching Objectives 1. Knowledge and ability aims (1) Students are to improve their reading ability of acquiring useful information in the two essays. (2). Students develop their thinking ability of judging, criticizing, and taking in what apply to them. (3). Students are to enforce their study ability of the English language. 2. Cultural and emotional aims (1). Students understand the different cultural elements reflected in the prose “Defeat”.

(2). Students immerse themselves in the atmosphere of optimism and learn to be optimistic. Section IV Important and Difficult Points The important point of the lesson is that students comprehend the prose and obtain the message expressed in the prose. The teacher plans to guide the students and raise questions to inspire them to get the meaning. The difficult point of the lesson is that there are many new words and the structure is also hard for them to understand. The teacher has printed the English definitions of the words and also the Chinese meanings so that it won’t cost much time in class. As for the structure, the teacher will introduce the writing techniques. Section V Teaching Methods Students-centered teaching method Section VI Teaching Procedure

Step I Lead-in The teacher lists examples of defeat in her life first to give students time to recall their defeats. Then asks them how they deal with their defeats. After that, the teacher leads in the topic of the class “The Beauty of ‘Defeat’”. Purpose: Students reflect their ways of treating defeat. Step 2 Introducing the author The teacher briefly introduces who Kahlil Gibran is, what kind of writer he is and what famous works he has written. Meanwhile, the teacher inserts some of the useful life experiences about the author. Purpose: Students get to know about the author of the prose so that they will understand the writing background, leading to their better understanding. Step 3 Reading for information 1. The teacher reads the prose with some light background music and students are asked to find out what defeat is in Gibran’s eyes. 2. Students are given more time to digest the prose since there are many new and difficult words. 3. Then students are required to read together the prose with the music. Purpose: By doing these, students get familiar with the prose and they can feel the phonetic beauty of it. 4. After reading, students are led to answer the question paragraph by paragraph. Purpose: Students are helped to understand the depth of the prose. Step 4 Reading to discuss Students are to discuss the two following questions. 1. What have you learned from the prose? 2. What have you learned from Kahlil Gibran? Purpose: The two questions are designed for students to deeply understand the content of the prose and internalize what they have learned so that they can use in their daily life. Step 5 Reading for language In this section, five students are asked to read the five paragraphs with music, and meanwhile students are encouraged to find their favorite expressions they’ d like to use in their further study. Purpose: Language learning is crucial for students all the time, so this section is indispensible, also contributing to the further understanding of the prose.

Step 6 Reading for techniques Rhetoric or writing techniques is a must in beautifying prose, so introducing the techniques for students contributes a lot for them to appreciate the beauty of the prose. Purpose: Appreciating the techniques of such a piece of writing is a must. So this section is for the students to learn about the various writing techniques which is also beneficial to their future learning. Step 7 Conclusion Students are asked to look back and recall what defeat is. Meanwhile, the teacher draws a branch of laurel. At last, the teacher finishes the class by quoting Kahlil Gibran’s saying “One may not reach the dawn save by the path of the night.”

Purpose: For one thing, students are guided to remember what defeat is in Gibran’s eyes. For another, it is the blackboard-writing design. Step 8 Homework Students are inspired to read more about Gibran and learn from him as much as possible. Purpose: For most students, this may be the first time for them to learn about Kahlil Gibran and such a piece of writing in English. So if they can continue their interest and read more about this great author, they will benefit more. Section VII Teaching Reflection To sum up after teaching, this is a successful attempt. I can tell every student listens and cooperates very well, for which I am really grateful. But still, there are some improvement. If I could have explained some of the words or sentences more clearly, the teaching effect would be better. If I could have manage the time properly, the teaching process would be more fluently. I sincerely hope that next time I can do better and improve myself.
