Teaching Aids : the multimedia , the exercise sheets ; the blackboard Teaching procedures : Step 1 Lead-in 1. Read the sentence from the passage and answer the questions. You needn't have spoken so sloowly. 1) Who said this-the tourist or the English person? 2)Why did she say it? A The other person was speaking too quickly. B The other person was speaking too slowly. C The other person was speakin slowly and it wan't necessary. Step 2 Explanation

1. didn’t need to do:

不必做且没做

e.g. It was Sunday, he didn’t need to go

to work. (So he didn’t go)

是周日，他不必去上班。（事实上没有去）

2. needn’t have done:

不必做但做了

e.g. The poor girl needn’t have waited in the rain for so long. ( Unfortunately she didn’t)

这个可怜的女孩本没必要在雨里等这么长时间。

（事实上她等了）

It was going to rain. You didn’t need to water the flowers. 2. 昨天你本没必要去车站。

You needn’t have gone to the station yesterday.

3. 你无需告诉他这一消息, 那只会使他悲伤

You didn’t need to tell him the news, it just made him sad. 4. 如果我早知道火车站这么近, 我就用不着打出租车了。

If I had known that the railway station was so near, I needn’t have taken a taxi.
