New Zealand Location New Zealand is in the Southern Hemisphere, lying between 34 and 46 degrees of latitude south in the Pacific Ocean. This puts it at about the same distance from the equator as Spain or California. The nearest large neighbor is Australia which is 1500Km (930 miles) to the west.

New Zealand consists of two large islands, North Island and South Island, plus several smaller ones of which Stewart Island is the largest and often referred to as 'our third island'. North and South Islands are separated by the 32km / 20mile wide Cook Strait.

Geography

The total land area is 270,535 sq km / 104,453 sq miles, about the size of Italy, the United Kingdom or the US state of Colorado.

North Island is volcanically active with a central plateau. South Island has the high snow covered mountain peaks and glaciers of the Southern Alps, a range running almost 500Km / 300miles along the Island.

Map of the Country

The National Flag

A General Introduction New Zealand’s awesome landscapes, lush forests, amazing wildlife and pleasant climate make it a haven for many outdoor activities, and a great place to unwind. New Zealand society is diverse, sophisticated, and multicultural, and the honesty, friendliness, and openness of Kiwis will impress you. And the great advantage of New Zealand is that all of its diverse physical, cultural, and artistic landscapes are so close to each other! History of New Zealand, the Youngest Country New Zealand is the youngest country on earth - the last major landmass to be discovered. It has a rich and fascinating history, reflecting both our Maori and European heritage. Amazing Maori historic sites and taonga (treasures), some dating back almost a thousand years, are a contrast to many beautiful colonial buildings. A walk around any New Zealand city today shows what a culturally diverse and fascinating country we have become. Treaty of Waitangi

An 1840 treaty between Maori and the British Crown is New Zealand’s founding document. Today, the Treaty of Waitangi has a major impact on all New Zealanders.

The Youngest Country

Only a thousand years ago, Maori became the first people to migrate to New Zealand. Since then, people have come from around the world to settle here. Early Settlement

Bravely voyaging across the Pacific from their ancestral homeland hundreds of years ago, Maori made New Zealand their home, becoming the tangata whenua — people of the land.

Colonisation

Though a Dutchman was the first European to sight the land, it was the British who colonised New Zealand, leaving an indelible mark on the country and its people.

Culture Introduction New Zealand has a unique and dynamic culture. The culture of its indigenous Māori people affects the language, the arts, and even the accents of all New Zealanders. Their place in the South Pacific and their love of the outdoors, sport, and the arts make New Zealanders and their culture unique in the world. Māori Culture

New Zealand’s indigenous Māori people have a unique and fascinating language and culture, which plays a major role in New Zealand life. Indigenous Culture The Māori people are the indigenous people of Aotearoa (New Zealand) and first arrived here in waka hourua (voyaging canoes) from their ancestral homeland of Hawaiki over 1000 years ago. Today, Māori make up over 14 percent of the population. Their language and culture has a major impact on all facets of New Zealand life.

Rich and Varied Māori culture is a rich and varied one, and includes traditional and contemporary arts. Traditional arts such as carving, weaving, kapa haka (group performance), whaikorero (oratory) and moko (tattoo) are practised throughout the country. Practitioners

following in the footsteps of their tipuna (ancestors) replicate the techniques used hundreds of years ago, yet also develop exciting new techniques and forms. Today Māori culture also includes art, film, television, poetry, theatre, and hip-hop.

The People Though a diverse and multicultural people, there are many qualities, including friendliness, individuality, invention and self-reliance, that you’ll find in most New Zealanders.

Arts

The influence of Māori, Pacific Island, European and Asian cultures makes the arts in New Zealand colourful, unique and vibrant - definitely something to look out for!

Kiwiana

A range of wacky and weird objects helps define what it is to be a New Zealander, or 'Kiwi'. These wonderful things are known simply as - 'Kiwiana'. Kiwiana — Celebrating Our National Identity Gumboots, ‘Buzzy Bee’ toys, marching girls, a meringue dessert, shell ashtrays, and a cookbook may not seem terribly important objects. But to many Kiwis (New Zealanders), such things assume vital importance as major icons of Kiwiana! What is Kiwiana? It could be described as all the weird and wonderful quirky things from years gone by that contribute to our sense of nationhood — our kiwi identity. What is a Kiwi? To understand Kiwiana, it’s important to first know what exactly a kiwi is. A kiwi is a flightless nocturnal native bird, and the national bird of New Zealand. It has a long beak with nostrils on the end, and fossicks about at night feeding on small insects. However, over the years, New Zealanders have become known as ‘Kiwis’ as well.

There is a ‘kiwi’ sense of humour, a kiwi ‘do-it-yourself’ attitude, and Kiwiana means the things that contribute to the sense of being Kiwi. Just to confuse you, the kiwifruit is often called a ‘kiwi’ in Europe and America and ‘Kiwi’ nugget (shoe polish) is known throughout the world, although it is an Australian invention!

The best known of New Zealand birds, the kiwi is nocturnal and flightless. There are six varieties of kiwi, though they can be difficult to spot in the wild. However, there are a number of Kiwi Houses around the country.

Kiwifruit The Kiwifruit, often simply called a ‘kiwi’ is of Chinese origin, but grows throughout New Zealand. It was originally called a ‘Chinese Gooseberry’ by New Zealanders, but when New Zealand started to export the fruit, it was decided to give them a better name. ‘Kiwifruit’ was the choice, because it would associate the fruit with New Zealand. The choice was timely, and New Zealand enjoyed record exports during the worldwide Kiwifruit boom. While kiwifruit are now grown throughout the world, you can always tell if a kiwifruit is from New Zealand, as it will be branded ‘Zespri’.

The Birds and the Buzzy Bees

The ‘Buzzy Bee’ — not the live one, but the toy — is probably the most famous single piece of Kiwiana. But it’s not just the bright red and yellow colours that make Buzzy Bee so attractive to Kiwis, who are far more used to the greens and browns of their native bush. As you pull the toy, the wings of Buzzy Bee rotate, making a wonderful loud clicking sound.

Natural Landscapes Rotorua

Rotorua is an active thermal area, similar to Yellowstone or Mount Lassen National Parks in the U.S. This picture shows EAP students walking through "Hell's Gate."

Tiritiri Matangi Island

Located just north of Auckland, at the northern end of New Zealand, Tiritiri Matangi Island is one of the country's most important conservation projects. After being

stripped of most of its native vegetation during the 20th century, many forests have been replanted and the island has been partially restored to its native state.

University of Auckland

The Clock Tower is the University of Auckland's landmark.

Wellington

The capital of New Zealand, Wellington is a small city at the southern end of the North Island. This is the view of the city from Victoria University of Wellington.

Wildlife For millions of years New Zealand has been isolated and unique birds, animals and plants have developed here. Best known are the flightless birds such as the Kiwi. Because there were no ground based enemies for ancient birds many lost there ability to fly with the passage of time.

Lizards, frogs, and bats are the only indigenous land animals in New Zealand. Dogs (kiri) and rats were introduced by the Maori, and red and fallow deer, trout, salmon, Australian opossum, rabbits, and domestic animals have been introduced over the last 150 years by European settlers. There are now strict regulations with very heavy penalties against the importing of plants, fruit and animals unless approved by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries to protect the New Zealand environment.
