Unit 1 Nothing ventured nothing gained
About the topic 本单元的话题是“Nothing venture, nothing gained”,学生将了解到:and structures 单元话题和结构
The Attribute
Period 1 Reading
Period 2 Learning about language
Period 3 Using language 运用课
Using language
Period 1
将Learning about language 和Workbook中的 USING WORDS AND EXPRESSIONS、USING STRUCTURES
Period 5 将Workbook 的LISTENING TASK、READING AND WRITING TASK和
SPEAKING TASK

Procedures
1.Warming up ⑴ Warming up by reading for forms On page 1 there are three short texts. Now read the texts to cut/ the sentence into thought groups, blacken the predicative, darken the connectives and underline all the useful expressions. Useful expressions make its web, try again and again, fix its thread, teach sb. be inspired to do, gain independence for, struggle in a world of silence, communicate with sb., live as a slave, return to one’s homeland, recover one’s lost land, sleep on firewood, remind sb. of sth., at bedtime, strengthen one’s determination
⑵Warming up by brain storming encouraging proverbs Good morning, class. Today is your first day of this term. And I believe you will have lots of work to do. Just as the saying goes Nothing ventures, nothing gained, you have to work still harder so that you might gain success in your studies. What other encouraging sayings do you know?
Sayings which encourage you
1.All things in their being are good for something.
2.Difficult circumstances serve as a textbook of life for people.
3..Failure is the mother of success. -- Thomas Paine
3. For man is man and master of his fate.
4. The unexamined life is not worth living. -- Socrates
5. Living without an aim is like sailing without a compass. -- John Ruskin
6. What makes life dreary is the want of motive. -- George Eliot
7. Towering genius disdains a beaten path. It seeks regions hitherto unexplored. -- Lincoln
8. There is no such thing as a great talent without great will - power. -- Balzac
9. The good seaman is known in bad weather.
10. An aim in life is the only fortune worth finding. --史蒂文森 ⑶Warming up by discussing Oxymoron (矛盾修辞) Today we shall read an article entitled A SUCCESSFUL FAILURE. What do you think of this title? Is there anything unusual about it? Yes, Oxymoron is used in the title. But what is Oxymoron? Oxymoron (or oxymora) are literary figures of speech usually composed of a pair
of neighbouring contradictory words (often within a sentence). However this is not always the case. The Webster Dictionary defines oxymoron as "a combination of contradictory or incongruous words". Oxymorons can be used for dramatic effect, for example: Hell's Angels and deafening silence. They can also be comical, such as in civil engineer. Clearly this is not an oxymoron in the true and strict sense, but the suggestion that it is oxymoronic is humorous. Examples of Oxymoron "O miserable abundance, O beggarly riches!" John Donne, Devotions on Emergent Occasions "It was the best of times, It was the worst of times." Charles Dickens A Tale of Two Cities "You'd be surprised how much it costs to look this cheap." Dolly Parton "I am always ready to learn although I do not always like being taught." Winston Churchill "I have never let my schooling interfere with my education." Mark Twain "I am a deeply superficial person." Andy Warhol "The only new thing in this world, is the history you did not know." Harry Truman "A joke is a very serious thing." Winston Churchill "The best cure for insomnia is to get a lot of sleep." W.C. Fields "To lead the people, walk behind them." Lao-Tzu "I'm so tired, I can't sleep." Kurt Cobain "Pennyroyal Tea" 2. Pre-reading by getting to know facts and defining Before we read the text, let’s first get to know some facts about Australia.
●Facts of Antarctica: Antarctica, the fifth largest continent, c.5,500,000 sq mi (14,245,000 sq km), asymmetrically centered on the South Pole and almost entirely within the Antarctic Circle. ●Define expedition: In tourism, a journey with few amenities, usually to a remote area, sometimes for a scientific purpose. 3. Reading
On page 2 there is an article entitled "A SUCCESSFUL FAILURE " You are going to read it to the recording. Now read the text again to cut/ the sentence into thought groups, blacken the predicative, darken the connectives and underline all the useful expressions. 4. Copying the expressions from the text join an expedition with sb., consider…a great honour, put one’s head out of…, appear grey, cross the continent of Antarctica, block out, feel breathless, return alive, a blast of, tear through, yell in a hoarse voice, hardly recognize as my own, hold on, struggle out of, dreamed of adventure, want for a dangerous journey, hide aboard the ship, in a small cupboard, suffer from seasickness, make sb. a steward, stick in pack ice, floating pieces of ice, waste time on…, make an urgent announcement, save supplies, show one’s determination, describe… as…, keep sb cheerful, win one’s complete faith in sb., give way to disappointment, keep busy, contribute to…, save one’s lives. settle on Elephant Island, remain optimistic, recover one’s health, return to rescue sb.
5. Transferring information Read the text again to complete the table with information from the text.
