作业

Teaching aims: After the class, Ss will be able to: 1.

briefly summarize the story according to the relationship diagram drawn between the characters in the story; 2.

make comments on the writing techniques (person, rhetoric, suspense, comparison, narrative techniques, etc.) and give their reasons after comparison; 3.

write a review of the detective story.

Teaching procedure: Step 1: lead-in Guide Ss to think about what a book review should include. [

Step 2: while-reading 1.

Briefly introduce the author and the main characters to Ss.

T: Arthur Conan Doyle was born in 1859 in Scotland. He studied at a medical school where he was taught by Dr. Joseph Bell, a man of great logic and deductive powers that made a strong impression on him. So his main fictional character, Sherlock Holmes, was based on Dr. Joseph Bell. 2.

Ask Ss to write down

the names of the characters in the story and draw a relationship diagram between them. T: How many characters are there in the story? Ss: Sherlock Holmes, Watson, Jabez Wilson, Vincent Spaulding, Mr. Spears T: Who is Sherlock Holmes and who is Watson? Who is Jabez Wilson? What kind of shop does Wilson have and where is it? Do you know what the expression “in the City” means? What happens to him? Who is Vincent Spaulding? What do you know about him? Who is Mr. Spears? 3.

Ask Ss to comb the experience of Wilson. T: What did Wilson experience? Place in order the things that Wilson experienced _______. a.

He got the job easily because of his flaming red hair. b.

He went to consult Holmes about the mystery of the club. c.

He applied for the well-paying job as Vincent suggested. d.

He saw the sign saying the Red-headed Club was dissolved. e.

He got the news from Vincent that the Red-headed Club was looking for a new member with red hair.

Ss: ecadb T: Please summarize them in one sentence.

Ss: In a word, Wilson, the shopkeeper, mysteriously ____ and then ____ a ___________ job in the ________________ -- simply because he had ________.

4.

Subsequently lead Ss to briefly introduce this detective story. This text is the first part of a Sherlock Holmes mystery story, The Mystery of The Red-headed Club, written by Arthur Conan Doyle. The main characters are

Sherlock Holmes, a detective who helps solve mysteries, Watson, a friend and assistant of Holmes and Jabez Wilson, a shopkeeper. The story is about how Holmes and Watson solve the mystery of the Red-headed Club for Wilson who has a strange experience. The shopkeeper mysteriously gets, and then loses, a well-paying job in the Red-headed Club -- simply because he has red hair. So he comes to consult Holmes in order to find out the truth. What does the red-headed club do and why is it dissolved? Is there anything wrong happening?

5.

Ask Ss to discuss the writing techniques of the detective story. T: We all know that this is just the first part of the story, so do you want to continue reading the following story? (Ss: Yes. / No.)

T: Why? (Ss: It’s attractive and I want to find out the truth. / It’s boring and there’s nothing attractive.)

T: You mean there is something that puzzles you. Is there anything mysterious in the reading passage?

Ss: the unusual assistant (who likes taking photos and processing them in the basement and seems quite content to work for half pay) the unusual club (all members of the Club are paid four pounds a week for very light duties) the unusual interview (Wilson is employed immediately because he is told he has just the right colour of flaming red hair) the unusual rules (Wilson must not leave the building for any reason during the working hours and must keep this matter confidential) the unusual dissolution (the club is dissolved this morning without telling Wilson)] T: That is to say the passage is full of suspense/mystery/puzzle, attracting the readers to read more. Can you find any other writing techniques used in the passage and make comments on them? T: Please compare another version with the given passage. Which one do you prefer? Why? One morning, Mr Wilson, a very stout, florid-faced, elderly gentleman with fiery red hair, called upon Sherlock Holmes for help. When Watson came, Wilson recommenced his narrative from the beginning. He told them he had a small greengrocer’s shop in the City,

…….

Wilson said he used to have two assistants, ……

The portly client puffed out his chest with an appearance of some little pride and pulled a dirty and wrinkled newspaper from the inside pocket of his greatcoat. On account of the bequest of the late Ezekiah Hopkins, there is now another vacancy open which entitles a member of the League to a salary of £4 a week for purely nominal services. All red-headed men who are sound in body and mind, and above the age of twenty-one years, are eligible. Apply in person on Monday, at eleven o’clock, to Mr Spears, at the offices of the League, 7 Pope’s Court, Fleet Street.

Ss: The language is simple and concise, making it easy to understand the story. The author writes in the first person with limited perspective, leaving readers a lot of suspense and space to think // producing very clear pictures in readers’ mind / making readers experience the same things as the character. The dialogue used in the development of the plot leaves readers a feeling of intimacy and authenticity / actually being there // makes the description more vivid.

Step 3: writing

Ask Ss to write a review of the detective story. T: We’ve learned how to summarize the story and analyze the writing techniques that attract you. I’m sure you’re prepared for the review writing. The purpose of a review is to give enough information about the story so that readers can decide whether they want to read it too. Your review can include a brief introduction to the story, the things you like or dislike about the story together with some supporting information and the potential readers of the book. 【T: Before writing, let’s have a look at some simple book reviews to see how to write your own comments. Examples:

In my opinion, Le Petit Prince

is a good book. The writer used eyes of child to expose desires and realism in adult world. Since it is a fairy tale, its interested audience is children. I’ve read many of Sir Conan Doyle books but the most interesting book I’ve ever came through is the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. This is a really detailed book. It’s very exciting, mysterious, and intriguing at the same time. The tiniest details that we tend to ignore, Holmes captures them and deduces from them. Hats off to Doyle! If he were alive in this era, I’m sure he’d have written stories based on today’s modern technology and modern ways of crimes committed. A Must Read Book. I will recommend it to all my friends. In the novel the Old Man and the Sea, the author writes in the third person with the main character being explored from different perspectives. The plot is paced according to the events being described, changing from a gently rolling pace to a tight and attractive one. What’s more, Hemingway’s language is simple and pithy, which I like most. He mostly writes in short and straight-forward sentences and practises an extreme economy in his use of words. This simplicity may seem unattractive to others at first, but as long as you read his work again and again, you’ll find new layers of meaning.】

Step 5: homework Ask Ss to find a detective story they’re interested in and write a review of it.
