As this is the first period of the whole teaching process of the more reading passage of Unit Two, the success of the following teaching all depends on whether the beginning is a success or not. But to be honest, the content of this reading passage is about a special prize set up by a foreigner and the students may lack the related English knowledge. As a result, the students may find it hard for them to understand the passage. So when designing my teaching, I should focus on stimulating the students’ interest in learning and helping them learn about the Nobel Prize step by step.

Analyzing ahead 1.

Analysis of the students

The English levels of the students in Class 7, Senior One are barely above average. What’s more, they are mostly boys and not quite interested in English. And as a result, they are more often than not passive in class. So it may cause me some trouble when assigning them some activities to do. It would be better if I take this into account when designing my teaching.

2.

Analysis of the teaching material The more reading of Unit Two is about one of the most famous prizes around the world, the Nobel Prize. Most students must have heard of it, but don’t know much about its detailed information. The writer of the textbook did not choose this world-famous prize from so many other prizes as an example randomly. The Nobel Prize is one of the greatest honors one can ever receive in one’s lifetime and one of the Chinese writer, Moyan, has just received one in literature, which may well arouse the students’ interest in the text. And that can be the best motive for the students to learn.

Teaching aims: 1.

Knowledge to obtain: Help the students to get familiar with the key words and expressions of the passage and the related knowledge of the Nobel Prize.

2.

Skill to develop: Help the students develop their abilities to comprehend a passage better by using different means and deeper thinking.

3.

Attitude to cultivate: Help the students to cultivate a positive attitude towards others and learn that the spread of knowledge can make the world a better place.

Teaching emphases and difficulties

1.

The new vocabulary of the passage can be a big barrier to the understanding of the whole passage. And therefore, necessary preparation in the beginning phase of the class and moderate guidance in class should be considered.

2.

The name of the Nobel Prize may sound quite familiar to the students, but they have little idea of any further information on it. And as a result, it is necessary to find appropriate means to guide the students through step by step.

3.

The comprehension of the whole passage doesn’t demand much time, which makes me choose either to stimulate deeper thinking or introduce some supplementary reading material. And consequently, it is necessary to allocate the time more appropriately and design the class activities as carefully as possible.

Teaching aids: Blackboard and Multimedia

Teaching procedure 1.

Lead- in (vocabulary work) Activity1:

read the new words and expressions Aim1: help students get familiar with the pronunciation and spelling Acitvity2: categorize the new words and expressions (Ex.A1) Aim2: help students correctly choose the word form according to their parts of speech when writing down their answers to the questions

Activity3: Aim3: write down the words according to their English meanings (Ex.A2) help students learn the meanings of the new words and expressions to understand the passage more easily

While-reading Activity 1:

skim the whole passage (Ex.B1) Aim 1: Help the students to form the habit of getting the general idea of a passage before careful reading.

Activity 2: scan paragraph 1(Ex.C1) Aim 2: Help the students learn about the founder

Activity 3: scan paragraph 2 (Ex.C2) Aim 3: Help the students learn about the ideas of the founder

Activity 4: scan paragraph 3 (Ex.C3) Aim 4: Help the students learn about the award ceremony

Activity 5: introduce supplementary reading material (Ex. D1) Aim 5: Help the students get better answers to the previous questions and get more answers to some other questions through extensive reading

Activity 6: go back to the text and scan paragraph 3 once again (Ex.E1) Aim 6: Help the students form the habit of deeper thinking

3.

Post-reading Activity 1: summarize the passage (Ex.F1) Aim 1: help the students form their opinions about the founder of the Nobel Prize and make comments

4.

Homework Do some after-class reading using the Internet and any other possible means to search for useful information to help you learn more about the Nobel Prize.
