周家祺晒课201906 Everyday Heroes: Firefighters
What do you want to be when you grow up? This is a question most of us have been asked while in school. Many young children have answered: firefighter or police officer. However, they often choose a different path when they learn of the hardships associated with the professions: long hours, dangerous missions, and a bad way to get rich, to name a few. Yet, there are those who persist and choose the road less traveled.
The forest fire that broke out on March 30 in Muli County in Sichuan claimed the lives of 27 Chinese firefighters and four volunteers, many in their early twenties and thirties, with the two youngest being only 18 years old. The outpouring
(涌现) of support from the general public after the incident has brought attention to the sacrifices these people had to make. The fire spread during the weekend of the Qingming Festival, which is a hectic (忙碌的) time for firefighters. Partially due to the Chinese tradition of burning offerings (祭品) for the deceased
(逝者), there is a large rise in outdoor fires around the country. While most of us spend our time praying and enjoying time with family, these brave souls are working around the clock to clean up the unfortunate incidents that we create.
Aside from the Sichuan fire, more than 2,000 firefighters took on a fire in Beijing’s Miyun district and 1,500 firefighters battled a blaze in Shanxi province during the same time frame. No casualties
(伤亡人员) were reported. Despite these successes, people began to note the startling (令人震惊的) statistics involving China’s firefighting force. China has fewer than 0.2 firefighters for each of its 1,000 residents (2012 statistics), far fewer than the U.S. at 3.6 firefighters per 1,000 residents. Many Chinese firefighters don’t stay on the job very long either (reasons listed above), so they may lack the experience of a more experienced firefighting team. Given the circumstances of the warming planet and growing populations, firefighters have become more important than ever before, so there must be a better way to make firefighting a more attractive occupation.
They, who appear when we need them the most. They, who think only of the safety of others. They, who would walk into the face of danger without a moment’s hesitation. We have taken them for granted time and time again, but today, at least for this moment, we honor them.
