Unit 3 More Reading------Learn to Care for Plants 【教材分析】

本课是第三单元Reading的延伸，介绍了几种我们日常生活中常见的植物。本文属于说明文体裁，主要对三种植物——茉莉花（white jasmine），玉兰花（Yulan magnolia），金球仙人掌（golden ball cactus）进行介绍。每段主讲一种植物，结构十分清晰明了。由于有了Main Reading的学习，对介绍植物类型的文章有了一定了解，学习这篇文章较为容易。与Main Reading不同的是，这篇文章除了介绍植物的外形特点，也注重了植物功能和生长环境的描述。通过学习这篇课文，学生可以了解植物的特点及其功能，为自己选种植物提供参考，同时提高学生的科学素养，也为以后口语和写作练习打下基础。

1. 文本特征

本课是来自报纸的一篇文章，包含了三种植物的介绍。这三种植物是我们较为熟悉的植物，文中介绍了其功能，特点及生长环境，让学生对其有更深一步的理解。

文本特点

1）从文本的语言看，虽然文本属于说明文。说明文有如下特点：文本的描述具有简洁性，没有过多的修饰语；同时在描述植物的特点时具有科学性，例如在描写花的时候，文章不再是用flower一词，而是用blossom，同时还出现了vine和bush一类词语；这篇说明文还不乏趣味性，说到叶子铺满地面时，用到了litter...with的结构，让说明的对象更为生动；最后是严密性，在文章中没有出现作者的情感态度的词，对植物进行了客观描述。

2）从文本的结构看，本文是报刊上的一篇文章，包括了标题、引言及正文。引言部分清楚地介绍了文章要讲的话题，同时告诉了我们这篇文章的来源。正文以每段介绍一种植物的方式，首句交待了植物名称，然后介绍植物的详细信息，让整个文章的脉络十分清晰，学生也能一目了然。

3）从文本的内容来看，描述的是三种植物的特点及其功能，这三种植物都是我们可以日常生活中可以亲自种植的。通过学习，可以增加学生的科学素养，最终能自己种一株植物，培养学生热爱生活与爱护环境的情感目标。

3. 阅读策略

1）练习学生的skimming和scanning技巧。

2）提炼和补充介绍植物功能和生长环境的科学用语，增强文章的实用性。

3）引导学生在阅读过程中分析文章介绍植物时所采用的策略，着重于植物的特点及功能。

4. 学情分析

1）学生在生活中与植物息息相关，但是只停留在对其名称和外形的认识，或者不知道怎样用英文表达，对植物生长所需要的气候条件也考虑较少。

2）由于本文没有要求学生进行预习，在阅读过程中对较为生疏的词汇（vine, bush, blossom, frame, tolerate）会难以理解，需要教师加强引导（图片、实物或者意译）。

3）学生对于科普类文章不太熟悉，还是在于平时的阅读和涉猎不足，教师可以推荐一些BBC纪录片，让文本和视觉、听觉相结合，学生的理解会更加深刻。

5. 阅读教学的重点与难点

1）教师要帮助学生掌握介绍植物时所要用到的科学词汇，还要树立学生在种植植物时需要考虑到各种因素的意识，看问题不能只从情感角度出发，还要讲求科学性和合理性。

2）教师要善于利用s图片及实物来扫清学生阅读中的障碍词汇（vine, bush, blossom, frame, tolerate）。

3）教师要充分利用相关的影像资料，让学生对于植物的认识更加深刻，同时也能更好地体会植

物王国的奇妙，从而让学生产生想探索和观察大自然的兴趣。

【教学目标】

1. Knowledge aim: To help students get the meanings of some new words and expressions (vine, bush, blossom, frame, tolerate). 2. Skill aim: To enable students to understand the passage by searching for functions, characters of the plants and the required climate conditions. 3. Emotional aim: To develop students’ strategy of introducing a plant by considering the reasonability; To arouse students’ awareness of caring for plants by raising plants.

【教学活动设计】

Lead-in (5mins)

活动一: Show some pictures of some plants and learn the names of them.

活动二：Look at a picture of our school and ask students what kind of plant they want to grow. The teacher asks the students’ suggestions and reasons.

What do you want to grow ? Why?

Possible answers:

Rose: romantic; beautiful(decoration); money-saving

Jasmine: sweet-smelling; decoration

Potatoes/tomatoes: edible

Fruits: edible; ornamental value

Gardinia: sweet-smelling; decoration; for tea

通过这个活动，可以让学生产生兴趣，通过给老师出主意，能够迅速抓住学生的注意力。

Skimming (5mins)

Task 1: Read the title, the introduction part and the first paragraph and answer the a few questions. 1.

Which month does the passage talk about?

Can you paraphrase “Spring is in the air”?

------- It means spring is everywhere. Or spring is coming/is around the corner/ approaching. 4. What can you see when spring is in the air?

------- The trees produce flowers / blossoms/(bloom).

Have a guess, what are the three plants to be described in the passage?

Cherry blossoms (sakura), Yulan magnolia, peach blossoms... 6. From which aspects will the plants be described?

Scanning (20mins)

活动一: Read the passage carefully and answer several questions .1. What’s the difference between jasmine bush and jasmine vine?(Look at the picture to describe.)

------- Jasmine bush is a low thick tree. -------- Jasmine vines produce more flowers than jasmine bushes. --------Jasmine vine needs a frame to grow on. 2.

Why is frame needed while growing the jasmine vine? -------- Because the frame can hold up/support the vine. 3.

What’s the city flower of Shanghai?

--------Yulan magnolia. 4.

Why is the Yulan magnolia suitable for Shanghai? --------It is ideal for cool, moist climate.(humid/damp) 5.

Can you describe the growth of Yulan magnolia according to the pictures? ----- The tree is covered with white blossoms in spring, followed by the green leaves in summer, which litter the ground with red and orange colors in autumn. 6.

Why does the author suggest planting cactus if you have no idea what to grow? ------ It is easy to raise. (well-adapted) ------ It can tolerate temperatures of below zero degrees centigrade. 活动二：Discuss with each other in the group what functions plants have and what kind of environment the plants need.

Watch a short video and fill in the blanks.

Some desert plants that live in exceptionally hot dry conditions take even more drastic measures. Leaves are thin and have a large surface area, so they lose a lot of moisture in heat. And many desert plants have done without them all together. Instead the valuable green pigment develops in the stems. And desert stems are often very thick and swollen, which enables a plant to store water in them. Not only that, some desert plants have pleats in these stems, so when there is sudden rainstorm, those ridges can suck up all the moisture. Post-reading (10mins) 活动一: After learning the passage, ask the students to think about the question again and give the teacher some suggestions. This time the students should not only give the reasons of choosing the plant but also provide some suggestions of how to raise it by referring to the living conditions of the plants. 该活动是为了复习学生们在本课学习的一些重点词汇，学会正确使用这些词语，同时也让学生学会科学地思考，多方面地去思考问题。

1. Review the new words and phrases and finish the exercises in your text book. 2. Write a composition of the plants you want to grow and name at least three reasons, using as many phrases you have learned in this class as possible. 3.Look up the usages of some new words in a dictionary.
