Unit Three

The Interesting World of Plants

Teaching Objectives: (1st period) At the end of this lesson, the sts will be able to: 1.

know the names of some flowers or plants, such as water lily, gingko, banyan tree, bristlecone pine tree; 2.

catch important information of a plant by scanning; 3.

know the basic elements to cover when introducing a plant; 4.

realize plants are friends for us to value.

Difficulties and Priorities: 1.

Sts don’t know the plant names, the teacher will use pictures to show them instead of using words/sentences to explain. 2.

Based on the structure of the text, the teacher will guide the sts to write their own introduction of plants.

Activities: 1.

“Do you know these plants?” (warm up) The teacher show pictures of interesting plants and the sts will guess their names/features. 2.

“What do you want to know about them?” (pre-reading) The teacher shows six pictures (water lily/Victoria lily/ lotus/banyan tree/gingko tree/bristlecone pine tree) without names of plants and asks sts what they want to know about these plants. 3.

Scan the text and look for the names of these plants. Then match the pictures (with plant names) with each paragraph. Read the plant names in chorus. 4.

Read paragraph one quietly. The teacher show a picture of water lily and Victoria lily, with all the words related marked out in the picture. Read the words in chorus if necessary. 5.

The teacher analyzes all the features of water lily and Victoria lily and designs a chart on the blackboard. Sts do it together with the teacher. 6.

Divide students into groups of four and complete a chart about the feature of each plant (each group member works on one plant and then exchange information within the group). 7.

Check the information in each chart together. Check the information on lotus together and show a picture of lotus with all related words marked out after this. 8.

Check the information on banyan tree/gingko tree/bristlecone pine tree in the same way. And show pictures to explain the new words. 9.

Summarize the information the author included when he introduces a plant. 10.

Ask the sts what they can include when introducing a plant besides its features. 11.

Show pictures of plants and human beings. Plants are friends of human beings. 12.

Group discussion: What can we do for the plants?

Homework: 1.

Read all words and phrases. 2.

Read the text thoroughly and mark all the relative clauses. 3.

Introduce a plant you are interested in and prepare a presentation (oral & written) about 60 words.
