Ⅰ.Teaching goals

1.

Ability goals: Students have learnt the indirect speech in the first period. In this period, they should be able to use and make reported statements in different situations. 2.

Learning ability goals: Use the reported verbs and linking words, especially when reporting a Yes/No question and a special question. Students can combine sentences into a paragraph using the indirect speech.

Ⅱ.Emotional target Students come to realize that two important keys to success are hard work and confidence.

Ⅲ.Teaching important points 1.

Enable the students to practice making reported statements. 2.

Enable the students to make a story using indirect speech as much as possible. Ⅳ.Teaching difficult points

When using reported speech, students may have problems shifting the verbs, tenses, pronouns and time expressions. Ⅴ.Teaching aids: Multimedia computer

Ⅵ.Teaching procedures

Step I Leading in Introduce Yao Ming’s quotation and bring out the direct speech and indirect speech. Meanwhile, we can inspire the students with great desire for success. Step II Practice the reported statements for facts.

1. Hear students’ voice. Ask students to talk about their own problems. Possible problems:

be shy

be timid be stressful

be depressed be negative

be nervous be a little bit lazy

be afraid of failure

no perseverance

no confidence get up too late

doze in class 2. Practice the indirect speech for facts. (Key to Success--- Hard work) 1) Yu Minhong said that he slept for 6 or 7 hours and worked for 16 or 18 hours a day. Yu Minhong suggested/advised that we (should) stay quiet and concentrate on our study. Yu Minhong suggested/advised that we (should) do everything with persistence. 2)

Gao Zhihua said that he made big progress through hard work. Gao Zhihua suggested/advised that we (should) do sports regularly. Gao Zhihua suggested/advised that set targets and stick to it. 3. Practice the indirect speech for questions. (Key to Success--- Confidence)

StepⅢ. Make guesses and give suggestions to Maggie who is nervous about the Pet Competition.

For example: Maggie was wondering how he could get rid of nervousness. I suggested that he should practice many times before the competition. Step Ⅳ. Presentation Ask students to make a story with their group members, referring to the pictures on page 20(PPT). Use the indirect speech as much as possible. Students will know that hard work and confidence are keys to success. StepⅤ.
