Situation construction: T shows some pictures of “A Chinese Odyssey(大话西游)

” and guides ss to retell the story, which will be a significant context of using subjunctive mood. 2.

The last picture shows Zhi Zunbao’s regrets, he uses “if clause”

to refer to some unreal situations. T presents Subjunctive mood, which is used to indicate unreal situations. II: Inductive

language

Examples offering:

Based on the story, T presents 3 sentences which separately refer to “unreal past”, “unreal present” and “unreal future”.

Induction: T guides ss to find out the rules of using subjunctive mood and put them into practice. 1)

Rules of indicating unreal past: a)

e.g. If I had not pulled the sword out at first, I wouldn’t have fallen in love with her.

b)

Practice 1: T presents a classic movie line and asks ss to retell it using the rule above. Once I had my best love, but I didn't treasure her. When I lost her, I felt regretful. It is the most painful thing in this world. Retelling: If I ____________ (treasure) her at that time, I __________________ (take) so much pain. T offers tip 1: if there is an auxiliary verb “had” in the “if” clause, then it can be put in front of the sentence and “if” omitted.

Ss retell the sentence again according to this tip 1. c)

Practice 2: ss retell the story “The famer and the snake” ---- What would have happened if the farmer hadn't seen the snake?

If the famer ___________(not see) the snake, he _________________ (not put) it under his coat. If he __________ (not put)it under his coat, the snake ___________________ (not bite)him. If the snake____________ (not bite)him, he _________________(not die). 2)

Rules of indicating unreal present: a)

e.g. If I were not the Monkey King, I wouldn't let her go.

Practice: T presents a classic movie line and asks ss to translate it into English using the rule above. If I were not able to live with the one who I love, I wouldn’t be happy, even if I were the Heaven Emperor.

c)

Discussion: Ss discuss: What would you want to do if you were a billionaire? And then work in pairs and make a dialogue. A: If I were a billionaire, ____________.

B: If I were a billionaire, ____________ . 3)

Rules of indicating unreal future: a)

e.g. If we turned into common people someday, we would live with each other.

Ss conclude the verb form “did/were”, and T offers the other two verb forms “were to do” and “should do”.

b)

Practice 1: T asks ss to retell the sentence using the other two verb form. Retelling:

If we were to turn into common people someday, we would live with each other. If we should turn into common people someday, we would live with each other. T offers tip 2: if there is a “were” or “should”

in the “if” clause, then it can be put in front of the sentence and “if” omitted.

Ss retell the sentence again according to this tip 1. c)

Practice 2: Group work T presents a classic movie line and ss work in groups of 4 to translate it into English. Student A uses “did/were”. Student B uses

“were to do/should do”. Student C retells the sentence putting “were” in front of it. Student D retells the sentence putting “should” in front of it.

e.g. If God gave me another chance, I would say 3 words to her --- I love you. If you had to give a time limit to this love, I hope it were 10 thousand years. If God ________________ give me another chance, I would say 3 words to her --- I love you. ▲_______ God to give me another chance, I would say 3 words to her --- I love you. ▲_______ God give me another chance, I would say 3 words to her --- I love you. d)

Practice 3: ss tell a story “if I were a millionaire someday”. Then T offers a sample.

Conclusion: ss conclude the rules of 3 different times by completing the table. Then T offers the sample and ss put down the notes.

Important tip: if there is an auxiliary verb “had”, a “were” or a “should” in the “if” clause, it can be put in front of the sentence and “if” omitted.

Further learning of subjunctive mood: a)

T offers an example sentence in which the “if” clause and the main clause refer to different times. Ss analyze the verb forms in the two parts of the sentences. b)

T offers another example, and then asks ss to discuss in groups and conclude the rule. c)

T asks a student to present the result and then offers the right rule. Ss put down the notes: if the two parts of the sentence refer to different times, then we choose the verb form separately according to the time. d)

Practice: ss make two sentences based on this rule. III: Homework Ss write a poem “if” in subjunctive mood based on their life experience, making sure their poems should refer to 3 different times: past, present and future.
