Content: The interesting world of plant (Unit 3, S1B Oxford English) Time: Mar.20, 2017 Students: Class 1, Senior One, Shangde Experimental School Instructor: Wei Jia, Shanghai Jian Ping High School

Overall Teaching Objectives: By the end of the lesson, the students are expected to find out more interesting characteristics of the plants around them and present their ideas with the lexical terms learned. Also, they are expected to think about how these characteristics are presented and figure out more interesting features on their own.

Teaching Objectives:

By the end of the lesson, the students are expected 1. to get familiar with some lexical terms about plants and be able to present their ideas with them. 2. to practice the skills of skimming and reading for facts. 3. to develop collaborative skills in the group work to resolve problems and draw conclusions. 4. to hold curiosity about nature around them.

Identifying the ways details are presented in an exposition.

Teaching Procedure:

While-task 1.

Go through the text quickly and then answer how many plants are mentioned. (optional—recall any details about the interesting characteristics)

Read the text paragraph by paragraph and find out the interesting features of each plant.

3.

Check the answers and learn some lexical terms with *CCQs or pictures or deduce the meaning based on the contents

4.

Think about why these plants are referred to as interesting.

5.

Reflect on the text to find out in what way these interesting features are presented. (T models—a person can stand on a pad—visualize the feature through an example.) Work in a group of four and add one interesting feature to any of the plants mentioned in the text.

Present the characteristics in the ways discussed above.

Read the text aloud and review the lexical terms learned. Find an interesting plant in their community/home or on campus and take a photo of it with the mobile phone. Help Ss practice the skill of skimming to get the main idea of the whole text.

Help Ss practice the skill of reading for facts.

Help Ss know some names of the plants and practice deducing meaning based on the contents.

Familiarize Ss with the text and remind them of the main focus of the text—interesting.

Develop Ss’

awareness of how to present details in an exposition. Post-task Help Ss review the lexis and practice the skill of presenting details.
